HONOLULU President Obama declared Tuesday that there had been a systemic failure of the nations security apparatus after being told about more missed signals and uncorrelated intelligence that should have prevented a would-be bomber from boarding a flight for the United States.
The president was told during a private briefing on Tuesday morning while vacationing here in Hawaii that the government had a variety of information in its possession before the thwarted bombing that would have been a clear warning sign had it been shared among agencies, a senior official said.
Two officials said the government had intelligence from Yemen before Friday that leaders of a branch of Al Qaeda there were talking about a Nigerian being prepared for a terrorist attack. While the information did not include a name, officials said it would have been evident had it been compared to information about Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the 23-year-old Nigerian charged with trying to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight to Detroit on Christmas Day.
The government also had more information about where Mr. Abdulmutallab had been and what some of his plans were.
Some of the information at the time was partial or incomplete, and it was not obvious that it was connected, the official said, but in retrospect it now appears clear that had it all been examined together it would have pointed to the pending attack. The official said the administration was increasingly confident that Al Qaeda had a role in the attack, as the groups Yemeni branch has publicly claimed.

A lot of trees are going into the recycling bin here.
"The president was told during a private briefing on Tuesday morning while vacationing here in Hawaii"
Can't be last week, because he stayed in D.C. until Christmas Eve for the Senate health care bill vote.
Obama is a shill, a dumbass, idealistic fool.
No racism here, just plain old scorn and disdain.
“No way to blame this on Bush-Cheney-Halliburton.”
Ha! That is where you are wrong. The zero has already blamed Bush.
I think soon I shall take the plunge and become an independent.
I doubt it.
The media would have just labeled it "an accident" or "mechanical problems," and no one would have known about the terrorist plot (if all on board had been killed).
Thanks to that brave guy who tackled the perpetrator, 300 people are still alive today, and we have hard EVIDENCE that it was a terrorist act (although the Obama administration is loathe to call it one).
“a lone wolf” per Juan Williams on Fox the other night.
wowww... the US Air Force has golf carts???.. they never gave me one to use while I was in !
Bad news, the terrorists smell blood big time because of this creep in the WH.
Yeah, you’re right, they’d be withholding news of the chemical tests proving an explosive was used.
And that one of the passengers was on the watch list and his father had told the CIA he was fanatic.
But eventually the truth would have been leaked. And then finally Janet would have left for personal reasons.
Meanwhile, Christmas and the end of Obama’s first year would have been under a cloud; and people would have been upset and suspicious that he and his corrupt administration were withholding info and failing to do their primary duty to protect us.
An oxymoron.
New Obama sitcom: “Flight 253, where are you?” Starring goofy feds and those madcap bombers. They’re a laugh a minute.
Sadly there is something to that statement if the best Chuckie Schumer can do is tout his death penalty law. Whoop-te-do, Chuckie, you will punish the perp AFTER he kills people (and delivers a death blow to our economy). Small problem ... the perp is willing - and plans - to die in the process. There goes your deterrent effect.
It is WAR, you RAT idiots, not a law and order episode.

He sure doesn’t look like someone I’d want covering my behind in a fight, does he? Quite the wimp.
I’m in California. It doesn’t matter what I call myself.
I’ve always liked the two party system, however. We make our coalitions before the elections, instead of after like in Europe.
That’s more honest. People see who is willing to deal with whom in order to get a majority vote to organize the House and Senate before they decide who they are going to vote for.
The Dems are willing to deal with the commies who want to destroy the country.
The question is if the conservatives will be willing to deal with the Reps who are often naive and stupid but don’t in their heart of hearts want the country to fail.
The commies got to the point where they were leading the Democrat party. Maybe if we could get to the point where conservatives were calling the shots in the Republican party, then things would go better.
But there aren’t enough conservatives who are willing to grind away at party politics and get to the point of running things. Conservatives go about their lives and then bitch and moan when standard issue Republicans are the ones sending out the mailers asking for contributions.
You need the long term planning and mind numbing dedication and year after year effort of the commies if you are going to defeat their take over of this country.
They can’t very well blame Bush for doing what they “themselves are wanting to do now can they?”
You’re right about that, and I would love to watch it blow up in their faces.
But from the looks of it they’re going to try anyway. I don’t believe the comments about the terrorist being released from Gitmo during the Bush admin was just FYI.
