Suspect’s Father Told U.S. of Son’s Extremism
New York Times ^ | December 26, 2009 | Eric Schmitt and Eric Lipton

The Nigerian man accused of trying to ignite an incendiary device aboard a trans-Atlantic jetliner on Friday came to the attention of American officials at least “several weeks ago,” but the initial information was not specific enough to raise alarms that he could potentially carry out a terrorist attack, a senior Obama administration official said on Saturday.

The investigative file was opened after the father of the suspect, Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, warned officials at the United States Embassy in Nigeria of his son’s increasingly extremist religious views, the official said.

“The information was passed into the system, but the expression of radical extremist views were very nonspecific,” said the senior administration official, who has been briefed on the inquiry but spoke on condition of anonymity because it is continuing. “We were evaluating him, but the information we had was not a lot to go on.”

The incident prompted a significant change to airline security on Saturday. Domestic and international passengers will not be allowed to move about aircraft during the last hour of a flight, and there will be extra screening of baggage at airports.

It was unclear whether Mr. Abdulmutallab’s name was entered into the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment list, which includes people with known or suspected contact or ties to a terrorist or terrorist organization. That list is maintained by the United States National Counterterrorism Center. It includes about 550,000 names.

Those people, however, are not necessarily placed on the federal government’s so-called no-fly list, which prohibits persons entering the United States because of known or suspected terrorists links. Mr. Abdulmutallab was not on that list, federal officials say.

Mr. Abdulmutallab [...] was carried off the plane handcuffed to a stretcher, his trousers sheared off.

It’s not hard to see that Radical Islam, as a psychopathological “religion” that is also a political movement looking for dictatorial “Ultimate Power”, attracts exactly the same kind of psychologically impotent “dead-enders” that both Stalinist Communism, Italian Fascism, and Naziism did starting around the first third of the 20th century. It naturally attracts thuggish types whose only talent is the ability to keep their consciences clear and clean as they go ahead with official sanction and intimidate, brutalize and kill anyone and everyone in their way. Think of groups as diverse as Nation of Islam, Adam Gadahn, some black guy in prison
who “converts” to Islam, and this current Nigerian rich boy who tried to carry out a plane bombing yesterday.......one of the world’s oldest religions , through one of its ‘branches’, has offered them an identity, a posture, a stance, and some validation for expressing their alienation from the ongoing processes of the modern world-—they get to wear these nifty robes, and headgear, grow voluminous beards, make Youtube videos in which they predict the end of Western Civilization, talk about the “holy” and “sacred” all the time, march purposefully down the “Arab street” with flocks of slavish followers behind them, and over and above everything else,
let it be known that somehow they will vanquish us, because they value death and martyrdom more than they value life.
Life SCARES them, if it’s not SHaria Law as far as the eye can see.
Lots of differences, but lots of similarities too: Communism always thought of itself as being in the “scientific” vanguard because they felt Marxism was “scientific”, Islam, on the other had, promotes itself as having already achieved its Civilization many hundreds of years ago, and wants to force the rest of the world to acknowledge and submit to that civilization, with its Imams and Holy Men as the earthly advance men for it.

Have you noticed the complete lack of “Muslim” associated with this clown.
And, what happened to the idiot that killed all our people down in Fort Hood?
Even Fox News now has a block on the word Muslim, apparently because the owner has a new association with a Saudi T.V. prince.
Watch your own behind is the best advice

I think I’ll just go ahead and take a leak on the floor instead...

I mean as long as everyone considers anyone else going to the bathroom a terrorist...

All I want to do is remove all doubt...

Somebody pinch me...I feel like this is a dream...

“We were evaluating him, but the information we had was not a lot to go on.”

What gets me is - his name was known. So put him on a “no-fly” list or some such and keep him off a plane! What’s the big deal? Take caution and keep the “suspects” off planes! When you feel comfortable he’s OK, take him off the list!

All he loses is his ability to fly here. So what? I know, ACLU will probably be up in arms.

“keeping people in their seats is going to keep planes from blowing up.”

Didn’t seem to stop Richard Reid from lighting his shoes, did it?

Ok, lets go back...That was 6 months ago...Lessee, that looks to be around June of, yep, 2009...

What was going on at the time, and what was the Congress, Senate and Administration really consentrating on???

All the Tea Party protests and the townhall meeting flak analysis and the release of Janet Nepalitano’s Domestic Terrorist manifesto...

And they ignored this warning from a reputable foriegn government official...

Hey, Barry...This is a big time fail on your part...

You better be glad that this bomber didn’t really succeed...

This one would be hard to explain, even with a cooked-up faulty, exposed centerline fuel tank capacity sensor story...

And I agree with you, the father needs to be commended for informing our government of this concern and potential threat...

It is absolutely clear who dropped the ball on this one...

Lets see if anyone holds a few peoples feet to the fire on this one...

Janet needs to be fired, right now...

And Obama had better count his blessings, and not his golf strokes that this was a failure all the way around the block...

A few calls from us would be in order I suppose...See if anyone has any backbone left in D.C.???

I won’t hold my breath...

great... so now the guy that refuses to put down the cell phone prior to departure becomes and airborne security event when he refuses to put away his laptop. Of course, such an event will require a diversion to an alternate airport for safety. No wonder the air canada advisory warns of increased delays!

This and the Fort Hood shootings, is there ever a terrorist incident that is a big surprise? Just close the borders or at least let the IDF watch the borders.

Remember about 40 years ago when all civil service workers were required to take an exam, which qualified them for different levels of government service. If these standards still exist, they don’t much matter now. Just about anyone could be responsible for compiling intelligence reports. Makes the rest of us feel real secure when we push back from the gate. Policies have consequences!

Obama official translation: “ Until he blows a bunch of honkeys to smithereens, we will do nothing to impede his movement”

There’s an excellent book called “The True Believer” by Eric Hoffer. It’s a quick read, but a very educational one. It explains very well why people can be drawn to radical movements.

Great...not only do we get strip-searched prior to getting on the plane, we have to be bored to tears after getting on it.

Mind-boggling stupidity! Let those we pay to prevent such an incident admit they seriously erred. Admission or not, they should all be fired.
