Rep. Parker Griffith, a freshman Democrat from Alabama, is switching parties to become a Republican, Fox News has confirmed.
Griffith is expected to make a formal announcement in an afternoon press conference on Tuesday.
Griffith succeeded former Democratic Rep. Bud Cramer of Alabama, who retired earlier this year in a hard-fought contest for his northern Alabama seat.
Republicans thought that district would be hard for Democrats to hold without Cramer on the ballot, but Griffith defeated Republican Wayne Parker by four percentage points -- even though Republican presidential nominee John McCain won every county in the district.
Former President George W. Bush won the district by double

Griffith did vote against cap and tax, healthcare, financial regs, etc.....but by and large he has a liberal voting record - especially by Republican standards. Clearly he saw the writing on the wall and he was going to get blown out as a Democrat - he has the same motivations as Arlen Specter here.
I think a fresh, conservative Republican will be a better fit for this seat, but I will say I am relishing in the bad publicity for the Dems.
Good news!
Wouldn’t someone switching to the GOP tend to vote more conservative after making the switch? Just a thought.
Thats the only thing I like about it too. It gives the dims a black eye.
As far as for being a Republican...Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins and Lyndsey Gramnesty are Republicans too....and they suck....
would be awsome if more democrats abandoned ship because of what the far left is doing- This november is goign to be hell for the democrats- funny, not long ago the left was jumping for joy because the right lost, saying that the right was all but dead- but you watch, the minor loses we had in last election will be nothign compared to desertion and defeat the left faces in 2010- I say good riddence- they’ve destroyed this coutnry enough already- and have had NO regard for our constitution- I think a majority of Americans are quite fed up with their disregard for law and our constitution
I just see this as good news. Alabama can vote him out in November, but at least the Republicans have one more person they can work with in Congress. It also shows that the Democratic Party is beginning to crack.
Not good news. I live in this district, and we would have had a chance to get a real republican. Now we will have a mushy moderate.
Close your eyes and dream this dream.
Jim Webb (D-Va.) switches.
59 votes.
Sorry.
Hysterical moment is over.
Move on.
Nothing to see/hear here.
I hope he is the first of many.
Run one in the primary.
Right now, it signifies a shift to the GOP that we need.
It shows the 'bluedogs' are nervous.
I hope and pray Bart Stupak is next.
How in the hell did a liberal get elected dogcatcher in northern bama?
is this Florence and the hip NW corner?
You can’t vote him out, and nominate a more conservative next year?
Apparently he was more conservative then the GOP Candidate, he won...
If the GOP keeps running to the left in their candidate picking, we are going to have a problem.
The party should be taking a hard look at who they let in, we would have taken that seat back no matter what.
Another Trojan horse?
Great. Another RINO.
