Coburn Forces Reading of 767-Page Single Payer Amendment
http://spectator.org/ ^ | 12.16.09 | By Philip Klein

Posted on 12/16/2009 10:10:26 AM PST by Maelstorm

Sen. Tom Coburn has just demanded that the Senate clerk read the single-payer amendment offered by Sen. Bernie Sanders -- and it's 767 pages.

Typically, Senators offering amendments will ask for unanimous consent to avoid reading the entire meausure, but all it takes is one Senator to object to demand its reading, and Coburn objected to Sanders attempt to dispense with the reading of the amendment.

To give you a sense of how this could delay things, it took the Senate clerk 18 minutes to get through the first 6 pages of the amendment, which were the table of contents. At this current pace, it will take 38 hours to get through the entire amendment.

You can follow along with the amendment here.

UPDATE: The body of the bill seems to be going faster than the table of contents, but it still looks likely to take at least 12 hours at this pace

Considering this 2000 page war on the United States also covers “citizenship deficient migrative work humans”, I motion that they go back and read it in Spanish when the English go-round concludes..you know...so as not to offend aforementioned “citizenship deficient migrative work humans”.

They could also bring a trampoline onto the Senate floor and she could jump up and down while reading it.

But I probably ask for too much...

Well it’s about time our side started using its wits.

I hear Dingy Harry is desperate to ram this through the Senate by or on Christmas day.

We must at all costs do whatever it takes to delay this thing through Christmas.

Then the Congresscritters will get an earful when they go home for the holidays.

Hopefully, they may even get the Rostenkowski treatment. After the Medicare shennanigans it’s a damn sight their elderly constituents will want a little chat with them.

Does this mean that any one Senator can force a live reading of any legislation or only amendments? And do House members have similar power?

As previously stated: if every piece of legislation had to be read out loud there would be a lot fewer pork-crammed monstrosities being offered up.

This is turning into a circus as the deadline gets closer and I’m enjoying every damn minute of it.

Someone said on tv that the clerk(s) won’t finish reading the amendment until after 11:00PM tonight.

Doctor No says, “Yes. I do want you to read the whole thing.”

He’s MY Senator, and he’s one of the best. And there aren’t many of those.

Most days I think the good Doctor is the only person in that area with any sense at all.

Finally, he is good for what he said he would do weeks ago. Futile though it may be it is the principal of the thing.

It would also be nice if he would make a point of order that a quorum is not present. That would require suspension of reading until at least 50 senators could be assembled.

Coburn for president. It would drive the left nuts, and we would get somebody with a spine.
