The mistake they makes is the same thing that Biblical literalists and Protestant fundamentalists make: they believe that science and faith are intrinsically opposed to each other and can never, ever be reconciled. It is a falsehood which great Catholic thinkers like our current Pope have strongly, repeatedly repudiated. Science is the one of the means to understanding God’s creation. Not the only means, but definitely one of them. For a religious person to view science as something to be feared and shunned is a gigantic mistake.
