It could jeopardize counterterror programs and thereby endanger Americans, but who cares? "9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to go on trial in New York," from the Telegraph, November 13 (thanks to Anne Crockett):
President Barack Obama said the September 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other Guantanamo Bay detainees will be put on trial in New York City. Speaking in Tokyo, Mr Obama said Mohammed, the self-proclaimed organiser of the al-Qaeda terrorist plot that killed almost 3,000 people in 2001, would face "exacting" US justice.
Bringing such notorious suspects to US soil to face trial would be a key step in Mr Obama's plan to close the US detention centre at Guantanamo Bay.
Mr Obama initially planned to close the centre at the US naval base on Cuba by Jan 22 next year, but his administration is no longer expected to meet that deadline.
It is also a major legal and political test of Mr Obama's overall approach to terrorism. If the case suffers legal setbacks, the administration will face second-guessing from those who never wanted it in a civilian courtroom.
Indeed.
The New York case may force the court system to confront a host of difficult legal issues surrounding counter-terrorism programmes begun after the 2001 attacks, including the harsh interrogation techniques once used on some of the suspects while in CIA custody. The most severe method - waterboarding, or simulated drowning - was used on Mohammed 183 times in 2003, before the practice was banned.... It's up to you, New York, New York!
This will bring all the MIHOP cockroaches out of the woodwork.

I don’t see how anyone, Democrat or not, can defend this. Is anyone aware of just the costs of conducting this kind of a trial in a Federal court? In the biggest, most crowded city in America? Anyone want to give the mastermind of 9/11 the full panoply of Constitutional rights? This is just awful.
We need an Administration that’s interested in Americans.
This trial will be a gold p0lated, 3 ring circus!
How can anyone expect for him to receive a fair trial in New York?
If Chuck Schumer goes with this program.... he's history in NY.
Let’s not jump to conclusions.
And if they try this scumbag in New York does that mean that there will be no death penalty?
Hope he has a massive heart attack before he arrives.
It is not insane - it is rational. Violence works. Yale University will not publish controversial material for fear of Muslim violence. Extortion works for Islam as as it does for the Mafia. Don’t let them off the hook by calling them insane.
KSM does not deserve a trial. Trials are for human beings, not animals.
I want to see that terrorist die. I want to see him pushed from the top of the Empire State building, alive, screaming and thrashing the entire way down until his body explodes on the pavement below.
Better yet, how do they find a NY jurist who didn't have a neighbor, relative, associate or acquaintance directly affected by 9/11?
A jury of his peers? Good luck with that!
I could care less if this asshole gets a "fair trial". My concern is not that there are too many people who will be recused because they are personally affected by this, but my concern is that this man is a member of an international suicide cult that could easily threaten to kill the families of any juror who votes to convict one of their own.
Hell this happened for decades in Mafia trials in the very city that this asshhole is being brought to for trial. Does anyone think that Al Queda does not have operatives in New York that would be more than willing to blow themselves up on the steps of the courthouse to make a point? Does anyone think they do not have the power to kidnap the families of jurors and hold them as ransom?
We cannot afford to try these people on American soil. These are war criminals and should be tried in Military tribunals and promptly executed.
The defence attorneys will find 12 semi-literate bottom feeders to sit on the jury. Remember, there is a sizeable chunk of the American population (some of whom are in the Obama administration) that believe in the 9-11 conspiracy theories.
The defence attorneys will also salivate that the standard of “beyond a reasonable doubt” will apply to their clients (their taxpayer funded clients), which will make it virtually impossible to end up with a appeal-proof jury verdict. The world of intelligence gathering does not result in a carefully controlled chain of evidence as you would find in a domestic murder investigation. Any attempt to prosecute these individuals on the rules of evidence applied to civilians will either (a) expose CIA and military intelligence officials, tactics and sources, or (b) require the prosecution to hide evidence to protect national security interests, which will lead to a dismissal of the charges. The “hearsay” rule alone will doom these prosecutions.
It’s federal court, so there is a death penalty.
What you said, and then maobama will appoint him terror-relations tsar.
That’s what Fox and Friends said this morning. Once he and the other 4 are on American soil, they get full Constitutional rights. They will whine about how tortured they were..waterboarding, etc. And some bleeding heart liberal judge will throw the cases out and they’ll all walk. This is a complete slap in the faces of the victims and their families of 9/11; and to the people of the United States. What is wrong with this picture??
