The Pentagon said it was never notified by U.S. intelligence agencies that they had intercepted emails between the alleged Fort Hood shooter and an extremist imam until after last week's bloody assaults, raising new questions about whether the government could have helped prevent the attack.
A top defense official said federal investigators didn't tell the Pentagon they were looking into months of contacts between Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan and Anwar al-Awlaki. The imam knew three of the Sept. 11 hijackers and hailed Maj. Hasan as a "hero" after the shooting last week at Fort Hood that left 13 people dead.
"Based on what we know now, neither the United States Army nor any other organization within the Department of Defense knew of Maj. Hasan's contacts with any Muslim extremists," the official said.
The Pentagon comments fueled a growing dispute among various branches of the government about whether Maj. Hasan should have been more deeply investigated before he allegedly walked into a crowded soldier-readiness center at Fort Hood and opened fire.
A person familiar with the matter said a Pentagon worker on a terrorism task force overseen by the Federal Bureau of Investigation was told about the intercepted emails several months ago. But members of terror task forces aren't allowed to share such information with their agencies, unless they get permission from the FBI, which leads the task forces.
In this case, the Pentagon worker, an employee from the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, helped make the assessment that Maj. Hasan wasn't a threat, and the FBI's "procedures for sharing the information were never used," said the person familiar with the matter.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said President Barack Obama had ordered all agencies involved in national and homeland security to review Maj. Hasan's case to find out if warning signs were missed .......

Lies and more lies—no one wants to be blamed. I hope the families can seek redress in court, somehow. The lack of any concern is amazing.
Once again the Wall has been established.
DC Sniper executed. Now how many years will it be before this so called doctor gets the same due.
Infuriating, absolutely beyond comprehensino. I DON’T GET IT.
I don't see how they can do that.but they surely know what the deal is...their loved ones were the victims of political correctness....the refusal to call a terrorist a terrorist.
I haven’t kept up - when did these contacts happen? Under whose watch, Bush, Obama, both?
Just like 9-11, no one knew anything. No one was responsible, lost a job, etc.
More innocent lifes lost while See no, Speak no and Hear no evil control our government.
As many have written or thought, only a white american male can be called a terrorist in the US.
I am in tears because if they CAN’T TAKE CARE OF OUR SOLDIERS, if they can’t SHARE INTELLIGENCE WITH EACH OTHER about important safety issues, LIKE THREATS OR POTENTIAL TERRORISTIC ACTS, how in the hell can we expect them to protect us?
bump
They don't trust Eric Holder. That's the bottom line here. They believe Holder is, if not one of them, willing to either tip off the enemy or go after those who fight the enemy.
I believe as they do.
Re: Army Wasn’t Told of Hasan’s Emails...
What the Hell?
Who did they not trust in the Army with this news? Isn’t this why we failed to prevent the 9/11 terrorist actions? I thought we were getting better at sharing such information. If you unable to reliably and openly share the needed information required to prevent terror, then terror will prevail. More importantly, we need to be able to define terror for what it is. We need to be bold, open, and able to fight terror wherever we may see it.
It hasn’t anything to do whether we think Muslims are bad people, whether they are born here or abroad; indeed, we need only be sensitive to the idea and realize the fact, that radical muslims want to kill us. And we need to do everything in our power under the law to prevent terror and killing whether here in the states are anywhere in the world.
Political correctness should not drive our ability to protect our families and our liberties. No one is saying that Muslims are an evil people. The reality is that radical muslims are intent on hurting us, and this is where we need to divert our attention and not on the lame stream media, which is intent on coddling the scared people in our nation, and allowing them to feel that this is an isolated event from a crazy nut job. After all, in my book, all the 9/11 terrorists were crazy nut jobs, it’s just that they acting as a group.
Try telling the victims and their families that this army psychiatrist was just a crazy nut job... that will make them feel better, won’t it? Not on your life. Don’t continue to stick your head in the sand just so your won’t feel threatened. The dead and wounded in Texas are just as affected whether this guy acted alone or with others.
FBI Knew of Hasan As Early as December 2008
