10 November 2009 Washington, DC (10 November 2009) –On Saturday night, National Right to Life Committee and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops gave Speaker Nancy Pelosi the push she needed to pass HR 3962, the “Affordable Health Care for America Act.”
Some pro-lifers heralded victory. The Stupak Amendment kept some abortion funding out of the government-run public option.
"As the health care debate moves into the Senate, the pro-life movement must repudiate the half measures currently being touted as victory in some pro-life circles," said Judie Brown, president of American Life League. "Far too many vulnerable human beings' lives hang in the balance, not to mention the credibility and integrity of the entire pro-life effort."
Here’s a look at the Stupak Amendment HR 3962, what we’ve lost and what we’ve gained.

Others, including American Life League, called the night a crushing blow to human rights and the battle for a culture of life.
“NRLC and the USCCB have dealt a horrific blow to the pro-life movement,” she continued. “If we don't act now and expose this deal for what it is, National Right to Life could again sell out the pro-life movement with the Senate vote."
"The Stupak Amendment was no victory for the pro-life movement," Brown said. "NRLC and the USCCB have traded millions of lives for political ‘success.’"
American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to natural death. Anyone who thinks this farce is going to stop the far left from voting for 0bamacare is only fooling themselves. All of these leftists already voted for 0bamacare even with this amendment in place.
If comments by some Democrats in the House are true, the language in the Stupak Amendment would likely be eliminated in conference committee.
I’m not sure whether the Stupak Amendment was a means to give cover to pro-life Democrats so they’d vote for the final bill or whether the amendment was put up for reasons of principle - but either way, it doesn’t sound like it’ll remain in any final bill.
Good grief, we’re talkin’ democrats here. E.g., we have “promises” granted by the sleaziest, least intellectually accomplished (real intellect, not marshmallow degrees in underwater basket weaving), and completely dishonest set of sub-humans in the history of the world.
Do you really believe they’ll stick to that ammendment?
Some sleazy lawyer will challenge the constitutionality of not allowing abortions, and our sub-par Supreme Jokefest will concur.
Stupak and the Blue Dogs got pawned. The Lib Dems like Wasserman-Sh*t will add on demand baby killing back into the bill.
We'll see.
They giveth from one hand and taketh from the other....
Absolutely. And the daily destruction of thousands goes on.
The Stupak amendment was a farce and CLEAR proof the GOP is still the stuppid party.
If the Republicans AS A SINGLE FORCE voted it down then the blue dogs would have been forced to vote no.
Instead the abortion issue was used as a sucker punch.
This is just like the stunt pulled with the BS flag burning amendment to distract from the Federal Marriage Amendment.
Idiots.
Yep. It was an unprincipled vote first and foremost, and secondarily, it was just plain stupid.
They've gotten pretty nasty with each other over there.
