ABU DHABI // The killing of 13 people by a Muslim psychiatrist at an American army base must not lead to the victimisation of Muslim Americans, the US secretary of homeland security has said.
On a visit to the capital, Janet Napolitano said grassroots efforts were vital to preserving relations between Muslim Americans and the wider community after Fridays shootings at Fort Hood in Texas.
We object to, and do not believe, that anti-Muslim sentiment should emanate from this, she said. This was an individual who does not represent the Muslim faith.
Describing the killings as a terrible tragedy, Ms Napolitano said a civil rights and civil liberties directorate in her department aimed to prevent everybody being painted with a broad brush.
That work is ongoing and is part and parcel of how we view security, she said. One of the things well do is make sure that were reaching out to the state and local authorities within the US, because they often have better outreach to members of the Muslim community than we do. Ms Napolitano was speaking to female students at Zayed University, and took part in a private question-and-answer session with them.
She said her visit to the UAE was part of the outreach programme to the Muslim community by the US administration, one that included the June speech in Cairo by the US president, Barack Obama.
Talks with officials during her visit centred on general co-operation between the UAE and the US on issues such as training and sharing best practices, she added.

He stumbled and was taken in by an Amish family and was frustrated because of it.
Who ever thought that the Muslim faith ever was part of any action against our freedom anyway?
I think the murderer would dispute that, Janet.
the gunman shouted "Allahu Akbar!
A recent classmate said Hasan once gave a jarring presentation to students in which he argued the war on terrorism was a war against Islam, and "made himself a lightning rod for things" when he felt his religious beliefs were challenged.
Hasan appeared less forgiving to Dr. Val Finnell when they were classmates in a 2007-08 master's public health program at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md.
He said that at a class presentation by public health students, at which topics like dry cleaning chemicals and house mold were discussed, Hasan talked about U.S. military actions as a war on Islam. Hasan made clear he was a "vociferous opponent" of U.S. wars in Muslim countries, Finnell said.
"He made himself a lightning rod for things," Finnell said. "No one picked on him because he was a Muslim."
"He told (them - his West Bank family members) that as a Muslim committed to his prayers he was discriminated against and not treated as is fitting for an officer and American," said Mohammed Malik Hasan, 24, a cousin. "He hired a lawyer to get him a discharge."
Bull----. I despise these scum sucking apologists.
What a bunch of crap! Islam is a cult of evil and killer’s if one does not believe as they do. Wake up America.
I love how they keep apologizing for these muslim devil worshiping scum but ridicule real Americans that are against their commie schemes. DC can go to hell.
We object to, and do not believe, that anti-Muslim sentiment should emanate from this, she said. This was an individual who does not represent the Muslim faith.
This woman is delusional. She would have it that folks shouldn’t be ‘painted with a broad brush’, yet we can remember not so long ago her description of the right wing element in tea parties and warriors returning home. Perhaps she should read a little history of the USA, which had to contend with jihadist piracy in the Mediterranean as soon as the British tribute no longer covered the shipping of its former colony.
A defense without a point.
I still don't want to live next to any, allow any access to crew-served weapons, or allow any near schools. And I don't want them starring in moral equivalency comparisons right next to me or normal people.
I don’t want them “victimized”. I want them DEPORTED.
neither does the muslim soldier who threw a grenade into a tent killing soldiers because he did not want to fight fellow musliims.
Seems the white house is in full spin mode on this and of course there will be a few dopes who still believe them.
Actually, it goes deeper than defying common sense.
It goes right to doing the Enemy’s bidding, and I don’t mean “Islam”.
When you WILLINGLY CAPITULATE to untruth, and punish the telling of the truth, you are working the will of the father of lies.
That’s all “PC” is - capitulation to lies.
she is against painting with a broad brush.
Guess she forgot about the report she had about the right wing
I know. The ultimate goal of the DC royalty is the destruction of the US and this just helps their cause.
OH YES HE DOES. NOBODY, NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE ARGUMENT WILL EVER CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE. FT. HOOD WAS THE LAST NAIL ON THE COFFIN.
Watching these Obamao spokespeople do their shuck and jive, I’d think the terrorist pig represented liberals. The lines of distinction between the American left and Islamic terrorists are getting very blurred. Does this administration think Hasan did something wrong?
Napilitano is a LIAR! Jihadists hate you, Janet, and want to kill you (and, unfortunately, me).
I think the scumbag would disagree with that statement.
He doesn’t represent all Muslims, but he’s representative of some Muslims. Anyway, the issue here isn’t what we’re doing to Muslims. It’s how this guy managed to stay in the Army, and why someone didn’t blow the whistle on him sooner. To think otherwise is a disservice to those innocents who died.
I'm with you Comedian.
I'm lazy.
excellent post.
No, this was not a tragedy. It was an atrocity.
And, Janet, you're painting with a broad brush when you say this act does not represent Muslims. This sort of thing has to be evaluated one individual at a time, and I know neither you nor anyone else has done that. (But you can sure find a lot of support for this sort of thing in the Koran and in Islamic history.)
