Louisiana Republican Congressman Cao releases statement after voting in favor of Democratic health care reform bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- Louisiana Congressman Anh "Joseph" Cao on Sunday morning released a statement after he voted as the only Republican in favor of the Democratic health care reform bill.

The health care reform bill, dubbed the "Affordable Health Care for America Act" (H.R. 3962), passed the U.S. House of Representatives in a 220 - 215 vote.

"Tonight, I voted to keep taxpayer dollars from funding abortion and to deliver access to affordable health care to the people of Louisiana," Cao said in a statement released by his office. "I read the versions of the House [health reform] bill. I listened to the countless stories of Orleans and Jefferson Parish citizens whose health care costs are exploding – if they are able to obtain health care at all. Louisianans needs real options for primary care, for mental health care, and for expanded health care for seniors and children."

Cao wrote he obtained commitment from President Obama that he would work together to address the health care issues of Louisiana, including the FMAP crisis and community disaster loan forgiveness, as well as issues related to Charity and Methodist Hospitals. "I call on all my constituents to support me as I work with him on these issues."

Cao said: "I have always said that I would put aside partisan wrangling to do the business of the people. My vote tonight was based on my priority of doing what is best for my constituents." His yes vote received a lot of criticism from Republicans.

The Democratic health care reform bill also includes the Stupak-Pitts Amendment, which will keep in place current federal law on abortion funding and conscience protections for health care providers.

Cao said: "Before the Stupak-Pitts amendment was adopted as part of this health reform bill, the bill failed to explicitly include the longstanding policy prohibiting federal funding of elective abortion and plans which include elective abortion. Thank[s] to the Stupak-Pitts Amendment, taxpayer dollars will not go to supporting elective abortions, and for thousands of my constituents, this was a top priority. By incorporating this amendment into the health reform bill, my colleagues and I made this bill better, and that is an achievement of which I will always be proud."

Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond, the archbishop of New Orleans, said he was grateful for Cao's vote. "I am grateful to Congressman Cao for his courage and determination to defend life. I appreciate his work to prevent abortion from being included in health care reform and for protecting conscience rights of health care professionals," he said. "I – and, I am sure, many in New Orleans would join me – [I] appreciate Congressman Cao's commitment to the people of New Orleans."

As Congress continues to ignore the very vocal will of the American people, I would not be surprised to begin seeing random acts of violence/vandalism against members of Congress.

The law of cause and effect in action.

Even if he switches parties, he’s going to lose. It was a fluke. A black democrat will be in that seat next year.

What a lying jerk. He cares far more about robbing the wealth of those earning it and distributing it to those who don't than protecting the unborn. Par for the course for the shallow Catholic church. I'm fed up with them.

the liberal courts will find the abortion ammendment unconstitutional... our national healthcare will also end up supporting sex change operations, elective plastic surguries, etc... the sky is the limit.

The final version? How many versions of going against the will of “We, the People” are we going to tolerate? We now need to wait for the new and improved version? Is this like “Destruction of America, Version 2.2 or is it still 2.1? I’m confused and have lost track.

At a minimum, the RNC needs to publicly pledge not to give a penny to Cao...

“The Catholic Church is pro-life? Who would have thought that.” - This should read: ‘”Who would BELIEVE that?” - sorry but supporting this sorry-a$$ed piece of legislation is all about the $$$, there is nothing in the bill that will stop a single $ going toward abortion. Any apparent restriction will either disappear or be so ‘gutted’ as to be meaningless.

Uh ... no. My parents didn’t certainly come here tax-free. And they certainly did not have the government pay for their college. Getting an education and becoming a part of the middle class meant the same thing as everyone else: blood, sweat, tears and living by solid American values.

Maybe in the years right after the war but I certainly doubt that. The south vietnamese certainly had their due after the Demo-Rats cut off funding to the South Vietnamese government at the time of the arab oil embargo thus ensuring the south would fall.

As for the vote, after further discussion with other conservatives, I am more mixed now. Cao is in a D +25 district and he waited after the bill had already passed to vote. He voted against the stimulus and cap and trade and on most other national issues with Republicans. He’s doing what he can to get elected though I would be happier if he hadn’t given the democrats cover to call this bill bi-partisan.

Few in the Catholic hierarchy really get it. If they truly believe that abortion funding won’t be back on the table after conference they are fools.

Its been reported that Cao and Aymound (the Catholic Archbishop of New Orleans) are tight it just may be that Cao was persuaded to support the move as a symbol of “Catholic position solidarity” (please note the quotes.)

For I contend its a foolish position .To draw a methophor the American Catholic hirearchy position is akin to Pontious Pilate washing his hands. If most bishops of the church believe they’re making a statement when that monstrosity should not have gone this far and been defeated instead. What will they say after it (abortion funding) pops up again and passes ?

They (the Catholic Hirearchy) fail to realize these politicians like Pelosi and Obama are not your old tyme democrats they are died in the wool socialists. You can’t “deal” with this brand of socialist.

Its now time for phase 3, getting signs and material out into those congressional districts. see http://www.theusmat.com/

Cao may well survive this but he really should have refuted Alymound’s position and voted with the rest of the Republicans. Because he may well lose his seat.

"RINOS and Blue Dogs need to be voted out in 2010. No compromises."

Uh...guys? Wake up and smell the REALITY. Anyone that continues to "think" that we'll have a chance in Hades of winning back this country in an election is even more delusional than the average California liberal.

The DemocRats (communists) intend to ram their agenda through against our will. They intend to overcome, to triumph, to succeed. Get it? We will be enslaved by them in the end. Does anyone out there comprehend what is happening in this country?

Obama to Push Immigration Bill as One Priority

JULIA PRESTON Published: April 8, 2009

While acknowledging that the recession makes the political battle more difficult, President Obama plans to begin addressing the country’s immigration system this year, including looking for a path for illegal immigrants to become legal, a senior administration official said on Wednesday.

Well now....you couldn't expect the DemocRats to turn on their commie North Vietnamese comrades and actually help America win the war against them, could you? Instead, the DemocRats have been "helping" America lose every war we've been in for DECADES now.

They are traitors and enemies of America and should be dealt with as such. And I daresay they will be.

Apparently Cao does not recall (if he even knew in the first place) what happened to Marjorie Margolies-Mesvinsky in 1994 when she allowed Bill Clinton to promise a commitment to get her vote for his budget in 1993.
