Abortion Vote Paves Way On House Health Bill GOP substitute being voted on next, then the full measure
President Barack Obama talks with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., after meeting with House Democrats about health care on Capitol Hill in Washington Saturday.
WASHINGTON - The House approved an abortion amendment and rejected a Republican substitute for landmark health care legislation, paving the way to final passage of the Democrats' plan late Saturday.
The House voted to add to its bill the amendment sponsored by Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., and others, that prohibits individuals who receive insurance subsidies from purchasing any plan that pays for elective abortions.
House Democratic leaders agreed Friday night to allow a floor vote on the Stupak amendment to the bill in order to win the support of about three dozen Democrats who feared that the original bill would have subsidized abortions.

It would be nice if this got enough pro abortion RATS mad enough to vote against the bill, but I suspect they know it's a ruse that will be dropped in conference with the Senate.

Some additional info.
Email I just received from Jodie Brown of American Life League (ALL):
It was just discovered that Speaker Pelosi's government-run "health" plan, that may be voted on tomorrow, WILL require you to give $1 every month to go for ABORTION!

Well...that must have been really tough strategy for them to come up with in order to garner Blue Dog votes....make them and the pro-lifers THINK your conceding on abortion! Looks like it worked!

You don’t get it. The Stupak language will be stripped from conference - if it ever gets that far - and there will be Democratic blood on the floor. They will never be able to bridge the abortion divide. Think strategically.

Final vote on now - so far 28 Dems voting now. 195 Dems voting yes. All they need is 218. Am sure they have it or they would not have had the vote today.

If they strip the Stupak language, the bill will probably fail when it goes back to the house floor.

National Right to Life deserved to be whipped because of their letter telling Republicans that a vote against Stupak would be a ‘No’ vote on their report card. They enabled the Dems to play the GOP bigtime and the GOP members who voted for Stupak were folls to fall for it.
To: Steelfish
the abortion "deal" is bullsh#t... they know it and the democrats that are "pro-life" know it. It just gives them cover to vote for this thing.
As if abortion isn't going to get paid for. All you have to do is use a regulation stating that the mothers mental health COULD be affected and there you have the "health of the mother" argument.
F'ing retards... make me want to puke.
The democrats need to be booted out starting with CHET EDWARDS!!! the number one FAKE conservative that is going to lose his A## this coming election.
I hope he looks up Charlie Stenholm and see how voting with the democrats worked out for him...
What has this country come to? My God, help us.
