The health care bill in the House, H.R. 3962, is in desperate need of votes, and pro-life congressmen are sitting on their hands demanding the legislation have stringent pro-life language which would keep federal money from funding abortions. Similar to the Hyde Amendment, which bars tax-payer money from funding abortions under the Department of Health and Human Services programs, the Stupak-Pitts amendment would accomplish the same under H.R. 3962

As any thought been given to having the Republicans oppose the amendment (even thought they support the principle) so they could blow up the bill in the vote later today?
I damn well hope so.
All of them don’t have to vote against it. Just enough to kill it.
I think I heard the GOP leadership saying they would be voting for this ammendment.
I think I heard the GOP leadership saying they would be voting for this ammendment.
Or possibly just refrain from voting.
Yes, the leadership will vote for it. I think it’s a mistake... we can poison pill the bill by voting no.
The Hyde Amdentment states “Life of the mother”, this fraudulent piece of political theater states “health of the mother”. Two vastly different things.
Any Congressperson voting for this bill is voting for Government paid for Abortion on Demand no matter how they try to spin it.
>> we can poison pill the bill by voting no.
That would assume that the ‘Rats in question are voting their conscience and principles, not just trying to protect their seats.
What if the (R)s vote No, the amendment fails... and the overall health care bill passes with full federal funding for abortion built in? It begins to smell like a really BAD strategy on the part of the Republicans, as well as a breakdown in their own moral principles.
And remember who the big losers would be in that case: the unborn. It’s not merely a political football; there are actual lives at stake.
No you cannot. The Blue Dogs are merely running this for show. It is political cover, most of them are still going to vote for this bill if it fails. Their leader all ready said it. The vote on this amendment does not change his vote on the bill. He is still voting for it.
If the GOP votes against it the Blue Dogs will then blame the GOP for killing the Amendment to excuse them for voting for the whole bill. Hang this vote around the Democrats neck. Do not aid them by playing political games that will only backfire on the GOP.
Enough of the Blue Dogs are voting for this no matter what happens on the Admendment. IF that were not the case, the Dems would never of brought this vote to the floor.
John Boehner (sp) just rose to say that the only way the bill was allowed to see the light of day was to secure votes for passage of the health care bill in the house and would never be allowed in the bill the senate and house finally agree on.
I don’t think that is true. I think there are lots of these ‘blue dogs’ who are looking for any reason they can find to not vote for this bill.
Let them blame the GOP. See how far that gets them when the GOP isn’t going to vote for the final bill.
They own this piece of crap. If they’re going to take a bite of it, we should at least make them do it without ketchup.
Not every Republican is pro-life so I’m not sure if either the amendment passes or whether the pro-life Dems will agree to vote for Pelosi-Care even if the amendment is defeated.
This creates a real conflict because you know groups like NOW, PP, NARAL, RTL groups, etc. are watching and taking notes.
I think the best position for Republicans is to support the amendment but allow party members to vote their consciences. In the end, this vote may not matter anyway.
I certainly support the amendment in principle, but I think anything and everything has to be done and/or considered in order to sink ObamaCare. That means being crass and cynical if necessary.
Unfortunately that is not true based on the statement of the author of the Amendment.
This Amendment is political window dressing. This gives the blue dogs an escape line with their voters next year. “hey I voted for the Anti Abortion Amendment. I am pro life too”.
Same scam most of these blue dogs pulled in 206 and 2008. Said one thing back home did completely different in DC, and yet the voters reelected them.
No matter how the Amendment fairs, most of them are voting for the final bill.
Depends on how you see the poison pill.
Agree on the life/health split. This is a winner for the Dems either way.
If they lose the vote, they’ll get the health amendment, which we all know is just a smokescreen.
If they win the vote, they’ll just ram the whole bill through. I’m once again, disappointed in the Repubs for not putting a carbon copy of Hyde.
I'm glad you think so. Mind providing a link to that statement?
Time for Conservatives to quit looking for things to complain about the GOP and hold the Democrats accountable for their actions.
You all got what you wanted that last 4 years. So pissed at the GOP you gave it all to the Dems. The GOP has not enough votes to do anything. The Democrats have massive majorities in both Houses. There is NOTHING the GOP can do.
So quit blaming the GOP. This is what "Conservatives" works so hard for 4 years to achieve. Perfect political irrelevance.

Makes no sense to my why the entire Republican caucus would vote anything other than ‘Present’ or ‘No’ on the bill. If Boehner has his caucus vote for this, he’s dumber than I thought he was. Let it get voted down and force Stupak and company to put their money where their mouth is. The goal is to derail this bill any way we can.
