[history]
Fort Hood, Texas (CNN) -- A civilian police officer who shot the Fort Hood gunman four times during his bloody rampage stopped the attacker cold, a U.S. Army official said Friday.
Officer Kimberly Munley of the Fort Hood Police Department is a "trained, active first responder" who acted quickly after she "just happened to encounter the gunman," said Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, Fort Hood's commanding general.

This certainly makes the Army look bad. A female civilian cop takes out the shooter while Army men are mowed down. If I read other threads right, this was a "PC" base with limited weapons. Should be interesting to see what comes out of this.

Sure is easy when you are talking about throwing away someone else's life! As someone who has been in more than a couple of fire fights, (Viet Nam).. I can tell you that Even when being armed to the teeth, when the rounds are flying .. You Really, Really wish you weren't there and you Really, Really want to run the hell away.
I can't even Imagine hot lead flying all over the place, me being unarmed and saying to myself .. I think that I'll just run on in and rush the mad man!
Maybe in the movies but in Real Life? ... NAH!

Are my facts right in saying they don’t allow servicemen to carry on the base? WTF?
To: jwparkerjr
Depends where the shooter opened fire. If he had walked into the M.P. HQ he would not have lasted very long. If the shooting occurred in a support services building or area, where most of the service members have not seen combat, you will see many more casualties.

I didn't call the soldiers cowards. I openly admitted I had never been in such a situation and have no idea how I would respond. All I asked for was a reason how 40 plus soldiers cold be gunned down and no one was able to stop him. Even if he could shoot a person a second it would take the better part of a minute for him to do what he did.
Being taken by surprise, and accustomed to acting only on orders from a superior, is not evidence of cowardice and I never said it was, or even hinted at it.
I regret that you took my comment to be calling them cowards. I have a son-in-law at CENTCOM in Tampa, a grandson in the Marines and a nephew who is a 1st-Sgt currently in Iraq. My father-in-law was a decorated veteran of wwII. I spent two hours yesterday in the Florida sun to photograph the procession honoring a fallen member of our community taking his remains from MacDill AFB to the funeral home. My son is a uniformed deputy sheriff. I would NEVER accuse these soldiers of cowardice. I simply want to know how such a thing could happen to that many soldiers. I can see it in college classroom, or a Luby’s restaurant, but I have to wonder how it could happen to soldiers. The lack of cowardice makes it even more of a mystery to me.
I backed out on another paid assignment to be there to get pictures of the procession for members of our church who are great supporters of the members of armed services stationed at MacDill AFB.
Bayshore Baptist Church is very active in programs for those who away from home serving in the military.

Oh you can be sure that Obama will be the first to whore her out as soon as she is well enough to do anything. I can hear the PR machine working right now at the White House trying to make up for the shout out heard around the world.
Sounds tasteless but it is the truth.

r9, Your desire to denigrate is quite rude, and confuses me. Nobody mentioned "cowardice" until you brought it up... squarebarb said this makes the Army look bad. I denigrate that. You asked if it's better to just roll over and die -- a tacit accusation of cowardice on the part of the soldiers. I denigrate that as well.
And now you're invoking Scott Beamer, whose actions you are offering in apparent contrast to those soldiers who (your meaning is now crystal clear) didn't charge as they should have.... You're rather loudly confirming my earlier suspicion about your meaning.
And you wonder why I don't believe your backpeddling?

Brava!
She did the right thing: head toward the shooter and kill him.
Compare and contrast with the cops at Columbine who wimped out.

Of course the soldiers were not (armed) - if they had been, there wouldnt have been a peep from that muzzie POS. Well, yeah ... but then, the whole point of attacks like this is to exact the largest possible death toll. Of course the bad guy is going to head to a place where his chances are maximized, and that means he needed to find a place containing a lot of unarmed people. That's just good planning on his part. You or I would do the same, if we were inclined to commit mass murder.

The Army looked bad! We do not know if any soldiers tried to stop him. there are 13 dead. That does not mean cowardice no matter how you wish to frame your specious argument.

M-9 vs M-1911A1. The M-1911 is old fashioned, has limited magazine capacity and requires a lot of training to use properly. OTOH, the M-1911 has reliably killed the enemies of the US for 4 generations and that's why I own a 45 ACP, as do my sons. As soon as the grandsons are old enough, they will get one as a birthday gift. Granddaughters to receive 1911 in 9mm. Good on the Officer, we pray for her quick healing as we doo for all the Soldiers.

I'm not being a smart ass, honest. Do you just stand there and let him shoot you, or drop to the floor and wait for him to get to you? I know he had the element of surprise, but he was seriously outnumbered. With this becoming more and more common any people or group that are would-be targets need to know what to do.
I saw a report on TV last year where a fifth grade teacher was teaching his students, 10-year-old’s, how to respond if someone enters the classroom and intends harm to the students. He has them all yell and scream and charge the person! The demo was very impressive. He has a code word known to him and the kids. The plan is if he says that word they are to take action. Pretty balsy, and I'm sure will meet with horror from lots and lots of people, but if it were my child in there I would rather them take action than be gunned down in their seats!

"Really a pretty amazing and aggressive performance by this police officer," Cone said. That pissed me off. If a man had done it, he would have said "highly skilled" or even "heroic", and he might also have said "we are grateful for the officer's selfless and courageous response." But a little tiny civilian LEO woman stopped the assault against the men under Cone's command, and he is "amazed", and her actions were "aggressive."
Cone needs an attitude adjustment.

Good that she hit him 4 times. Bad that after 4 times, she still didn't kill him. Maybe he wore body armor. Hard to say whether she shot him before, during or after she was shot by him.

Im sure you would have behaved differently then the surprised and unarmed soldiers who were shot.... you would have charged the guy with your fists flying and gave him a good ol Chuck Norris roundhouse that decapitated him and then crapped down his neck.
I cant believe anyone in their right mind could be questioning the actions of people who got mowed down in a sneak attack by this idiot.

So did "barb," who apparently possesses quite a bit more humility than you. Please explain what the Army did right? I see dead people.
You are defending the indefensible and berating those who disagree with your "Army Pride". You are trying to reframe the article to support the Army, rather than honor a hero. This woman went into a fire fight. Have you?
Sorry, I was in the Navy. They taught us better, I guess! We even know how to put out fires!
