NY-23: Watertown Mayor: ‘It’s Over’ (Scozzafava endorsement sunk Hoffman)

SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. – I caught Watertown, N.Y., Mayor Jeff Graham, who endorsed NY-23 Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman this weekend, looking very glum at Doug Hoffman’s election party. I asked him what happened in Jefferson County, where Watertown is located, and where Democrat Bill Owens is leading the vote.

“We lost,” said Graham. “The Scozzafava endorsement, the [Watertown Daily Times] endorsement of Owens–I mean, they roughed Hoffman up.”

Could Hoffman still pull out a win? Graham grimaced. “It’s over.”

Dede was the 3rd candidate Ross Perot style; not Hoffman.

A good night for the GOP but I am disappointed. We were leading in all 3 big races in the weekend, and I wanted the Trifecta to really signal a sea-change. The Dems will spin the NY-23 and the takeaway lesson is that we NEED a united GOP to defeat Democrats.

FoxNews just projected Owens has won. Dede Scozzafava’s endorsement of Owens was the key IMHO... so not only did the GOP waste $900k on her, but she stabbed the GOP in the back. Everyone who helped her is discredited, as she ended up giving enough bump to put Owens over the top.

This is now the 2nd race the GOP has blown in New York. If they make similar mistakes in 2010 we wont get the House back.

Rove: Statewide wins by the GOP in many other places.
6 of 7 races in Pennsylvania.
GOP won a state senate race in Michigan.
St Petersburg mayors race won by GOP.

So a lot of wins for the GOP across the country.

Jeff Graham is not, nor has he ever been a Democrat.

He ran and won election as mayor on the NY state Independence Party.

He may have run [maybe even won] on the Republican ticket earlier in his career, but he was on the ballot as the Independence Party candidate for US senator in 2006 against Hillary Clinton!

Unfortunately, it seems he endorsed Dede. Doofus.

If we lose this one - it only cost us $900K to buy a lot of RAT votes.

Crying over spilled milk wont get us anywhere. We have a lot of work to do to clean up in our party & look forward to 2010 & beyond.

We keep saying this was a spanking for the Democrats and Obama, but it had damned well better serve as a wake-up call for US, too...

You can have all the endorsements you want from conservatives, but without a strong GOTV effort, YOU STILL LOSE.

And we don’t help to win elections when we rapid-fire pundit from our computers, either. You win elections by GETTING INVOLVED, and giving real-life support to the CONSERVATIVES in the race.

Once we knew what was up, how many of us on FR made phone calls to the district in support of Hoffman? (Including ME!)??

Did anyone on FR (Including ME) step up to organize a phone banking campaign for Hoffman? Or did we set back to see how it would all play out?

We all knew what was up, yet none of us did a damn thing to help. Sure, we sent a few bucks, but what did we do TO HELP??

This should be a lesson for us, that we have to take in to the 2010 primaries and campaigns. Let’s USE the organizing power potential that FR has to get REAL CONSERVATIVES elected.

STEP ONE: Find out when your local Republican Party Candidate meetings are, and START GOING. You’ve only got until about January to get this process started.

“You know what’s coming..”It was Sarah’s fault” or they will say this proves the GOP needs to become moderate.”

It’s not that the GOP needs to be more moderate. But we need more people like McDonnell: confident, competent, charismatic... as well as being conservative.

Of course..but that is what the media will say but seriously screw them. Obama went to New Jersey, what, THREE times, and he still lost. Obama tonight was the biggest loser

Excuse me - but I take umbrance to that remark— being born and raised in NYC-

We have Bloombucks to contend with—we were totally against bloomie overturning term limits after the ppl voted on it twice— and the cost of living has gone up due to him -he jumps party lines regularly. The man is VERY LIKE NOBAMA, inflicting a nanny state on NYC and the only other choice was the Dem shades of Dinkins - Thompson who signed his own death warrant by appearing with that shyster Al Sharpton..Living in NYC when Dinkins was mayor was a horror story! NYC voted for the LESSER of the 2 Evils

I’m not disheartened in the least.

In this contest, social conservatives stood up to be counted and refused accept the social liberal with a Republican label.

That is the war to be waged.

As long as it continues to be waged, there is a lot of hope, even with the loss of a few battles along the way.

To be honest, despite living in Watertown for six years I had no idea what party Graham belonged to. I did have a conversation with him at Ft. Pearl (no autographs please). I guess I am used to more conservative non-Dems. Still, I voted for the guy.
Next to Owens, Dede was a good choice. Graham did throw his support to Hoffman after Dede turned traitor, but too late.

Take all of the umbrage that you want, my comment was not aimed at you. It was aimed at the rest of the population who continue to elect the corrupt, fail to promote any honest and ernest candidates, and sit around complaining about evil Conservatives.
