"Today, I again seek to act for the good of our community,"
"It is increasingly clear that pressure is mounting on many of my supporters to shift their support. Consequently, I hereby release those individuals who have endorsed and supported my campaign to transfer their support as they see fit to do so. I am and have always been a proud Republican. It is my hope that with my actions today, my party will emerge stronger and our district and our nation can take an important step towards restoring the enduring strength and economic prosperity that has defined us for generations."

She was going to be beaten. This is only so they don't look beaten. So it can look like Hoffman needed this. He didn't.
Excellent point. So in one fell swoop, Scozzafava can mitigate her failure, and by extension, the failure of the NY Republican party, and simultaneously detract from Hoffman's incredible numbers.
I smell fear on the part of the established RINO's, not just in NY, but across the country.

It appears that by endorsing her, Newt Gingrich effectively shrummed Ms. Scozzafava. Time to coin a new one ... Newtered.

As opposed to:
“Vote for the Republican.”
Do you not see that she’s clearly signaled her supporters to vote for the Dem? It’s as plain as the nose on your face.

My hunch is Newt simply didn't look at the candidate closely enough and gave a rash endorsement he now regrets.

I’m concerned that too many of us will use this as an excuse to ‘declare victory and go home’....
We need to ‘hoffman’ every incumbent up for re-election in 2010 - not just the RINOs and the Big Government Establishment Elite, but every ‘Let’s-Make-a-Deal’, ‘Go-Along-to-Get-Along’, ‘Principles-Are-Made-For-Compromising’ denizen of the DC swamp....
The True Conservatives (and there are a few) will pull up their socks and survive - everybody else must go!!

UPDATE
Hoffman's statement:
This mornings events prove what we have said for the last week; this campaign is a horserace between me and Nancy Pelosis handpicked candidate, Bill Owens. At this moment, the Democratic Party, the Working Families Party, ACORN, Big Labor and pro-abortion groups are flooding the district with troops and they are flooding the airwaves with a million dollars worth of negative ads. They are throwing mud; they are trying to stop me. Its time for us to send a message to Washingtonwere sick and tired of big-spending, high-taxing, career politicians and by voting for me on Tuesday you will send that message loud and clear.

The people did make the difference. To everyone who donated to Hoffman’s campaign, thank you very much. We are the kind of people that the Republican party does not want to hear from, other than to come out and vote for them periodically.
Look at how that is working out. We have a professial political class that believes they know best about everything, are constrained by nothing, including the Constitution, and the people should just shut up.
They don’t want citizen legislators and they don’t want people who believe in a representative Republic.

she could have endorsed Hoffman. Of course, that would not be good for the party. The truth is, they need the dems to win so they can keep the party reined in

Dont be surprised to see this upset rino endorse the democrat. Wouldn't surprise me a bit to hear her begin making happy noises about Bill Owens, and slipping in a few well-placed snarks about Doug Hoffman.
Not that I'll be listening anyway, but maybe someone will catch her on a Sunday talk show or something, and we'll hear about it here.
