Natalie Portman reinforces stereotypes about loony veggies by 'equating meat-eating with rape'

By Lucy Jones Film Last updated: October 28th, 2009

Natalie Portman has beef with carnivores Photo: PA The Huffington Post has hosted a one-off blog by Hollywood actress Natalie Portman in which she describes her journey to vegan activism.

On the whole, her piece is considered, but there is one element of her missive which has angered readers, even triggering accusations that she is a an apologist for rape.

Portman talks about the idea, promoted by the writer Michael Pollan, that eating meat to be polite to your fellow diners is illogical and “would be absurd if applied to any other belief”. Portman’s chosen example of another belief? Well, rape, actually.

Except, you know, in every way.

TTIUWP: Ok, here you go:

You know, combine this with Gore Vidal call a 13yo rape victim a hooker, and IMO we should really just isolate and build a barrier around Hollywood for the next 2000 years. The mental illness there is highly contagious.

I've been a vegetarian for years and recently became a vegan.

I first cut out pork and beef because of a strong family history of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. So far I seem to have escaped this fate.

Then I cut out meat altogether. I felt better, but I still had a tendency to gain weight. Finally got fat (220 lbs, 6 ft).

I got the fat off by sheer determination.

At the urging of my wife and daughter, I tried vegan. It worked. The fat stayed off easily.

I never miss meat. Occasionally I miss cheese or other dairy products.

I also do not like to kill animals.

However, I certainly deviate from this diet in order to be polite or accomodating.

Watched Top Chef last night. Portman was a judge, made the contestants make a vegan dinner. Never heard of her before. She is an airhead.

Ah, the God-given desire to “matter” and to be significant,

so misdirected when you reject your significance with Him.

Cool.

I’m assuming that you don’t expect everyone around you to do the same under force of gummint, right?

I thought “meat is murder”?

Now it's rape too?

How about “violence against women”?

Maybe it's racist. Sure, that's it. Eating meat is racist.
