ALBANYFormer House speaker Newt Gingrich never mentioned Doug Hoffman's name during a radio appearance this morning, but had a clear message for Republicans in the 23rd Congressional District: "The vote you're going to cast for a third-party candidate is going to guarantee the election of a Democrat. If you think that adding another vote to Nancy Pelosi's majority is a good idea, that keeping Nancy Pelosi as speaker is a good idea, then it's fine. But don't kid yourself."
"John McHugh is a moderate Republican, he's held the seat for a very long time, I think 20 years," Gingrich, who has endorsed Republican Dede Scozzafava, told Joe Donahue on WAMC's The Roundtable. "She's not dramatically different from McHugh. So in that sense, it would be like electing someone who's like a Republican from that part of the state."
Gingrich then sounded a similar theme as an appearance on Fox News earlier this week where he called out Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty for endorsing Hoffman.
"But the question I raise to all of my friends around the country is, if we all claim we don't want Washington to be in charge of everything and we all claim we want local control, and we want the 10th Amendment respected and we want to return power to the state and local level, how come when the New York State Republicans in four separate meetings make the same unanimous choice and at all four meetings pick Dede Scozzafava, how come that's somehow not good enough?" Gingrich said. "And we're now going to impose our judgment from all over the country even though we don't live there, we weren't part of the meetings, we didn't see hat happened, and I think that's a very bad policy. I think that we have some obligation to respect the fact that Georgia's not the same as New York and New York's not the same as California, and California's not the same as Alaska. I think we ought to be a little cautious about trying to impose our national genes on a local community."
"...how come when the New York State Republicans in four separate meetings make the same unanimous choice and at all four meetings pick Dede Scozzafava, how come that's somehow not good enough?"
Gingrich is not just wrong, he's lying. This was not how Scozzafava was selected. The actual story is a bit more complicated, and a whole lot uglier than what has been generally reported.
The following link, courtesy of Freeper StatenIsland in another thread, is an account of how, in addition to Scozzafava, there were actually eight other GOP prospects vying for the spot, ALL of whom were acceptably conservative and would have been endorsed by the NY Conservative Party, thus guaranteeing a GOP win, except that the GOP committee chairwoman manipulated the voting process to put in her friend, Scozzafava. In fact, Scozzafava was the one the Conservative Party folks specifically told the GOP committee they would not endorse. The ugly truth is that not only were all eight conservative GOP candidates betrayed by a corrupt committee chairwoman, she also betrayed her own committee members.
Here's the link from the TCOT Report:
He just can’t give it up, can he? How the he** does he figure voting for the most conservative is a vote for Pelosi? Voting for scuzziface is the vote for Pelosi.
Almost all of the people swept into office who signed that contract broke it and their word within a short period of time and then the "Newt" ran off and left us high and dry to chase a few bucks and his new bride.
Sad because he had good ideas but he was just another glib salesman with no depth.
He probably fears his Party network being cast into irrelevance along with himself.
Know what, Newt? This kind of arrogant condescending talking down only works on ignorant brainwashed RATS. You’re dealing with conservatives and we don’t fall for the propaganda you’re pushing. So STFU!
Mr. Newt has DEFINITELY lost his way! He’s(apparently)adopted Rodney’s”Can’t We All Just Get Along”?
Gingrich is done. He is not even an elder statesman anymore. He is just an old Republican guard retired. There will be many more! We live in a new day and a new age. NO MORE RINOS!
There’s still something that Mr.Newt has over Pelosi. He can STOP smiling?
In that district the social issues aren’t the main driver, the people in the Adirondacks are more libertarian leaning like out west as opposed to the social cons in the south.
It’s Dede’s spending and taxing and anti-gun stances that makes her unbearable to those in the district. If Dede was at least a fiscal con, Doug wouldn’t even be an issue.
Because, Newt, the issues you cite are governmental, all relating to governance NOT to political parties. The fact the you confuse (or misrepresent) the two speaks volumes.
Quite an admission by Mr. Gingrich. He admits that he and his pals have been propping up a Leftist with an R by his name for two decades.
“John McHugh is a moderate Republican, he’s held the seat for a very long time, I think 20 years...She’s not dramatically different from McHugh.”
I’m not sure I entirely agree with that. McHugh and Scozzafava are both big union supporters, but McHugh is more conservative on several other issues, especially social issues. He’s no Reagan, but (IMHO) he fits the definition of “moderate” far better than Scozzafava, who is just plain liberal on most every issue.
Go to hell, Newt.
And DO let the door hit you in the ass on the way out ...
Newt has become shameful. Every time he shows his face on my TV, it gets turned off.
He is now being treated the same way as Obozo.
“The GOP treats Conservatives the way the Donks treat minorities.”
Bingo!
You’re exactly right. And time and again people bite on it.
There. Fixed it.
So sad. Newt could have had the chair right next to Reagan.
We are taking our party back, Gingrich; so get lost.
He had to choose between party and principles.
He chose wrong.
Conservatives are sick of holding our noses.
Damn right ND. Does Newt not think there are comservatives
in Up State?
I really think Newt has lost his mind, he came up with
the Contract with America which was a winner but then
didn’t come through for America.
I don’t vote for Republicans, I vote for conservatives
who will fight the creeping socialism of the democrat
party!
I hope it’s time we conservatives sent a strong message
to the party, get on board or get left behind! We don’t
need or want democrats in republican clothing.
I didn’t vote for Ronaldus Magnus because I thought
he was “like a democrat”, I voted for him because
he wasn’t going to eat democrat hind teat, but
whup them up oned side and down the other, which
he did even while compromising with them.
Then I watched the Bushs get both get reamed by
being too accomodating. Damn it, I want to ROLL BACK
Socialism , not live with it!!!
