With polling now showing NY-23 has come down to a two man race between Hoffman and Owens, the Democrat, momentum is clearly in Hoffmans favor.
Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota is now adding to the momentum becoming the first sitting Republican Governor to endorse Hoffman. This comes on the heels of Sarah Palins endorsement from last week.
What makes this stand out even more than the Palin endorsement is that Pawlenty has not been seen as diverging with the Republican establishment. Hes not seen as the maverick that Palin is.
But Pawlenty has a huge amount of stature inside the Republican establishment, more so than Palin. That he is now willing to come out in favor of Hoffman is going to resonate among the Republican establishment in ways Palins endorsement will not.
And it now sets up battle lines for 2012. I still dont think Palin is going to run, but even were she, we now have two candidates, a former Governor and Vice Presidential candidate and a sitting Governor and potential 2012 candidate breaking with the establishment in favor of the Republican base.
Governor Pawlenty sent RedState the following statement:
We cannot send more politicians to Washington who wear the Republican jersey on the campaign trail, but then vote like Democrats in Congress on issues like card check and taxes. After reviewing the candidates positions, Im endorsing Doug Hoffman in New Yorks special election. Doug understands the federal government needs to quit spending so much, will vote against tax increases, and protect key values like the right to vote in private in union elections.

I’m waiting for McQueeg and his lap dog to openly endorse Scuzzabama.
Well the RNC is a mess, lol
Pawlenty - boldly hiking down trails that others have blazed.
I hear the fall of pebbles, sweet.
Tim went to the doctor and had a testosterone injection, so before we start cheering let’s first see how long it last.
We need GOP leaders who can police the party from disasters like Scuzzy. Bravo for Palin and Pawlenty. Newt, Newt, what happened to your so ballyhooed Contract with America idea? Did that change when the Bummer flim-flammed his way into office?
That’s just why people like Sarah Palin have blazed them. The welcome mat has been thrown down.
Well I am becoming a fan of his.
My first pick is Jindal, then Palin, then Pawlenty for 2012.
Last on my list? NEWT
I will never ever cast a vote for that guy.
timmy come lately..but better late than never...
It took a back seat when Newt parked his ample backside in the Speaker's chair and got a tingle going down his leg from all that power.
The Hill reports:
Other candidates, like former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R), have said they will not get involved on either candidates behalf.
Yeah, my exact first thought.
Yes being from Minnesota I know the drill with Timmy, late to the party because his finger was still in the air. Trust me here he is not Presidential timber except in his own mind.
You have got to believe Boehner had a big vote to whom the GOP would throw their support.
credit where credit’s due. republican governor for a non-republican candidate, ostensibly for ideological reasons? that’s pretty OK.
Newt is not the answer...
