How Can Glenn Beck Be Right on So Much and Yet Still Believe the book of Mormon? (serious question)

Posted on 10/26/2009 7:51:02 AM PDT by Scythian

I'm a huge Beck fan, in fact I'm listening right now here

http://www.ksfa860.com/common/gap_streamer.php

but something really confuses me. It takes the ability to use real critical thinking to know what Beck (and most of us know about the state of the country and where we are heading). That is, we have the ability to discover the truth no matter how much the media or conventional wisdom try to hide it. Yet on Mormonism, Beck is cleary wrong. Any Christian knows that the book or momonism is severely flawed and that Joseph Smith was no prophet. How can Beck cut through all the chaff of what is going on in our world and come to the truth and yet believe the writings of Joseph Smith? It doesn't make sense? I'm not saying he's up to something secret, not by any means, it's just that he's so right about so many things and completely wrong on the most important thing. Now, he just said on the air that he believes Jesus is the Savior of the world and that he is Mormon.

I also think that because he is Mormon he is not attacked near as much if he was a Evangelical Bible only believer. Anyway, am I nutz or does Beck being a Mormon seem bizarre?

By and large, Mormons are an honest, clean, decent, industrious and patriotic lot. (N&A)

WELL SAID !! All the Mormons I know are wonderful and honest people. Enough said!

If you were auditioning for godhood, you'd attempt to be honest, clean, decent, industrious, patriotic, and wonderful, too. The problem is that the Bible says we've all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. It also says, thru the prophet Isaiah, that our works before God are more along the lines of used menstrual cloths. To think we can bounce our way up to godhood status by being temple Mormons isn't being very honest with ourselves, now is it?

I archery hunt in August, so I can’t rifle hunt. And no, I didn’t get a deer but my son and husband did, plus and elk, so we have plenty of meat in the freezer.

I too wonder how Beck could believe such nonsense, since a person as stupid as I has seen through the BS. It appears from this thread that it is politically incorrect to wonder that aloud. Thought police abound on FR.

He met his wife, she was a mormon... I really don’t think you need to dig deeper than that. Lord knows we’ve all done crazier things for our wives.

I read enough of your recent posts to want to throw up. It’s opinionated, nasty Mormon bashing, 24/7.

If Beck worshiped a magic beanstalk it wouldn't change the fact that he has exposed the fascist slobs in the current administration. Who or what he worships has nothing to do with the important work he has undertaken. I'm just glad we have someone like Beck to speak out against the wrongs of this administration.

Glenn Beck and his wife discovered Mormonism together. She was NOT a member of the LDS faith when they were dating....quit with the claptrap until you know the facts.

Religion is not some altered form of thought. It is nothing but beliefs, so what a person believes is extremely important to understanding who they are, where they are coming from, and if their ideas can be believed.

I beg to partially disagree with you. Faith in the Bible is described as both a content of what and who we believe (like where Jude 3 says to contend for the faith once delivered to the saints) AND it's a living, trusting relationship with a Living Son of God who died for us (John 17:3).

If religion "is nothing but beliefs," then Jesus was wrong when He said the following: "You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me... (John 5:39)

Jesus says true beliefs -- the Written Word -- testify to Him, the Living Word. According to the Bible, lots of folks with true beliefs will go to hell. Even Satan knows true beliefs to a greater degree than we do -- but like the people Jesus talked about in Matthew 7, doing God's will has to move beyond belief status:

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' (Matthew 7:21-23)

His wife decided that’s what she wanted, and he followed along. As I said, we’ve all done dumber things for our wives.

He’s not the first nor the last guy to change religion for his wife.

There is no claptrap here, but the realities of a happy home life.

A lot of dissonance/deceit on this thread today. Here's a link to an Oregon radio station which is playing Glenn on delay. They are in the first hour right now, if anyone wants to listen to what Glenn said today regarding the assault on him trying to use his Mormonism beliefs.

Faith involves all that one is, including the intellect.
Human beings often compartmentalize, and Beck does this when it comes to his religion: he does not apply his intellect to his faith because he likely understands that he dare not.

Beck would not admit to doubts about his mormonism if he has them...the cost to him with his family and friends would be too high. Leaving the mormon church is seen as a great "sin" and taken personally by many members.

There are instances of "apostates" losing spouses, friends and family members because of it.

Here

Also, alcoholics are prone to "magical thinking" Magical thinking: the ability to draw conclusions that are based on a person’s desire for what reality should be, not necessarily upon what reality actually is.

"Magical thinking" plays well with the cognitive dissonance required to believe in Joseph Smith, visions of God and Jesus appearing to him, golden plates, the bestowing of the "keys" of the "priesthood" by Peter James and John on Joseph Smith, and the requirement of baptizing the dead as mormons by living proxies.

Beck would do well to not mention his faith on air.

Pick one. A weekend with Mormons or a weekend with Muslims.
There are no Mormons plotting your death and the Destruction of our country.

I don’t care if Beck believes in the Flying Spaghetti God, he is right on and correct on the political issues that are important to our country.

It takes a childish mind to think everyone should just forget what they know and allow anything and everything to be because somehow it is just “arrogance” otherwise

Pay attention.....I said ignorant, not arrogant.

And, what's with the allow anything and everything to be

statement? What's being allowed, an opinion different then yours? God forbid.

It must be hard going through life knowing everything. Glad it hasn't gone to your head.

Now, he just said on the air that he believes Jesus is the Savior of the world

In time he will see the complete truth. It just takes time.
