Gallup wonders: What happened to Sarah Palin’s favorable rating?

Worth posting if only to lay down a marker about where her favorables were before the book was released. At 40/50, there’s nowhere to go but up. Hopefully.

Palin became a bit of a sensation after John McCain tapped her as his running mate last August. But over the course of the campaign, her image suffered, going from a 53% favorable rating immediately after the 2008 Republican National Convention to 42% by the end of the campaign.

Palin’s ratings have not recovered, and her current 40% favorable rating is the lowest for her since she became widely known after last year’s Republican convention…

Palin could compete for the 2012 nomination because she is still widely liked by Republicans — 69% have a favorable opinion of her while only 25% view her unfavorably. But she may have difficulty succeeding in the general election, given that Democrats have overwhelmingly negative opinions of her, and independents view her more negatively than positively.

They offer no explanation for the slide but it’s not a mystery. Follow the link and see for yourself when the divergence between her favorable and unfavorable numbers started to grow. Anything important happen this past July? It’s not just Gallup either. If you scan Pollster.com’s poll of polls on her net favorables dating back to last year, you’ll find that she was pretty near even as recently as … mid-July, when suddenly the slide begins. In fact, Gallup’s numbers today are actually an improvement for her: The last three polls taken showed her approval in the 30s and her disapproval in the mid-50s. Proof positive, I guess, that her resignation has resonance with voters and will be a major issue in the primaries if she runs. I’ll bet Huck’s gaming out the “America can’t afford a quitter” ads as we speak.

In early polling she only get’s in the high teens to low twenty’s of the Primary vote and comes in 2nd or 3rd typically. Not awful but she doesn’t own the base either.

After one night with McCain and her ratings drop? That's a shocker.

Sarah is smarter than everyone on this forum and the pathetic opponents that she will run against. She needs no advice from anyone in here. So quickly we forget she toppled opponents in Alaska who were entrenched establishment types who probably thought she was stupid too.

The biggest enemy of the corrupt establishment that is the government is Sarah Palin. May she wipe out all those who seek to destroy the United States from the inside and outside.

So she dropped a whole 2 pts in a year, from 42 to 40? Wow. Amazing. A year in which the media and even many Republicans attacked her and her family non stop. And a year that included her resignation. Not too bad. Given the margin of error it basically means she’s stayed the same over the past year. And that’s before her book and hopefully some good publicity. By the end of the year she’ll probably be above 42.

I love how Gallup includes her and Edwards together. Edwards totally imploded, was revealed as a complete sleaze and criminal, dropping faster and worse than anyone in history to 21%. She pretty much stayed the same and slipped slightly from 42 to 40. But they make it seem comparable.

Obama meanwhile has gone from 78% to 56%, a decline of more than 25% in 9 months. I wonder if we’ll see any stories about that. “Obama’s popularity tanking even worse than Palin’s, new poll reveals” Biden went from 59% after the election to 48% in July. A decline of around 20%.

Her unfavorable skyrocketed from 49 after the election to 50 now. Obama was at 18 in January and above 40 now. “Obama’s unfavorables more than double in 9 months, new poll finds”

He went from a +60 to a +16. She went from a -7 to a -10(still within the margin of error).

And 41% among Independents. Not completely awful. I thought she was death to independents. A Gallup Poll as of Aug 23rd had Obama at 42% among pure Independents. He dropped from 75 to 52 amonmg overall independents, a 33% decline. Biden went from 55 to 38, again a close to 30% decline.

Of course her ratings will be lower as they were lower to start with. But for the most part she’s stayed failry constant the past year. Given all that has happened to her that’s pretty good, all things considered. If the past year didn’t totally finish her off, then she can only go up from here.

Think about it, the media has spent the past year praising Obama/Biden as the saviors and attacking her and ridiculing her like no one else I can remember. She’s still pretty much at the same place. Meanwhile depite their best efforts Obama/Biden have been steadily sinking.

And to be quite honest, if 21% of Americans still have a favorable view of John Edwards, this country is totally doomed anyway.

I agree with you that more appearances would be better, but it’s Oct, 2009. You don’t want to be out there every day. I think people got tired of the endless campaign last time lasting over two years. She knew she had the book coming out so to be on all the time recently and then for the book would be overdoing it. You don’t really see any other Republican doing all these interviews.

I agree something along the lines of that weekly radio commentary Reagan did would be a good idea. But it sounds like she’s still figuring out what to do. All these requests. And they’re all far away as each trip for her isn’t the same as if you lived in NY or DC. And she does still have young kids and a baby.

I suspect you’ll see quite a bit next month and then she’ll see what happens with that and decide what to do next year. If the response is at a certain level, she’ll be just fine.

Maybe she’ll just decide that the media attacks and all the hatred towards her and her family isn’t worth it and take the 25M+ from the book deals and speeches and do what she feels like. I wouldn’t mind.

But all in all she’s doing as expected. Give her a yr to campaign against Romney or Huckabee and I think she’ll do just fine.

Polls are very volatile. Even Reagan had a favorability in the low 40s as late as 79/80. Think of it this way, if you’re still favorable towards her at this point, you’re in for keeps, unlikely to ever desert. So a base of 40% rock solid favorable is a good place to start from.

Hillary had 52% unfavorable as of April 2007 and she was lapping the dem field by 30 pts. Ahead in most general heats, too. She blew it in IA but still would have won if there wasn’t a guy out there who had 90%+ support among the key minority group in the dem party. Plus all that stuff with FL and MI not counting and the wierd calendar with all those caucuses. If OH/TX/PA were after Super Tuesday instead of large black states like MD, VA, LA, DC where he could rack up all these lopsided wins, she’d have won easily.

There is no Obama in the GOP field who commands 90%+ support among a large group like that.

If Palin is still at 50% unfavorable in Apr, 2011, she’s in trouble. Now, it doesn’t matter as much.

Lets see what happens. If what happens 3 yrs out from an election matters we’d all have been posting about Bill Frist or George Allen as the nominee last year. Remember Rudy’s 70+ favorables in the summer of 2007?

Wait till her book tour. She will be doing interviews, and from what I have read on the web, Harper Collins is setting up appearances at book stores. These will be the real news makers because 20,000 people will show up to have their book signed.....LOL...The interviews will help her a lot, and so will the release of her book.

Remember, even Bill Clinton said she is not to be underestimated............

Is it fall 2011 already? Oh, its not? I’ll wait and see what happens when it is. This old guy will support her, I see the pioneer spirit in her, she is what America “was” all about. She didn’t quit, she is just attacking in another direction, in the words of the Marines at Chosin. I sense this woman is studying her battle plans, getting ready for the main attack. I would expect that of her, she isn’t as stupid as the MSM want you to believe.

They will continue to 'misunderestimate' her, because they just don't understand the mindset of those who support her. It is not in their nature to understand conservatism, so all they know how to do is snipe, criticize, and work hard to undermine her in any way they can.

Oh, she’ll be out there when she’s on her book tour. Then all those who haven’t read her opinion pieces will get to see her unfiltered by the media. She doesn’t need to rush. She’ll do just fine.

Interesting, Gallup is the same organization that says Obama has an approval rating of 56%, but Rasmussen sees it much differently.

My computer needs serious work. Today I had another incident where the computer had to increase ‘virtual memory’.

My disc shows a lot of space left but I’m thinking something is not correct. So - my computer is running slow.

‘virtual memory’ has to do with RAM, not disk memory or space. More RAM would help.

You might also try deleting files in Browsing History to speed up the machine.

She hasn’t ran for anything. She hasn’t campaigned and the news media constantly slanders her in the worse way. Still I don’t believe her real rating is 40%, but even if it is, that is not bad for someone who isn’t really campaigning and whom a lot of people think has left politics.

Lol, me too, but I’m sure you know more.
RAM, yes I think I probably am about due for a new computer as I have this one filled with images and music.

Thanks for the info!
