The Tragedy of Krispy Kreme
Yahoo Finance News ^ | October 13, 2009 | Carol Kopp

Posted on 10/14/2009 8:48:23 AM PDT by ETL

Krispy Kreme had been a popular doughnut chain in the South since 1937, but remained unknown to the rest of us until about 1996. That's when the first Krispy Kreme popped up in New York City, on West 23rd Street. ..."

Krispy Kreme stock hit a high of about $49 in 2003. Then it started on a long downward spiral, losing about 90% of its value.

This company had problems that had nothing to do with its doughnut recipe.

It over-expanded and took on crushing debt. There were allegations of management misconduct. Some franchises went bankrupt. Competition was fierce in the cheap eats category. More people started consuming healthy foods.

In short, Krispy Kreme managed to lose money selling something that is both cheap and delicious.

Krispy Kreme are the Wonder Bread of doughnuts.

I'd rather eat a dog shite sandwich than either of those two products of modern chemistry.

Less than 20% sugars actually. The same as any other glazed doughnut.

They may be over rated, but they are not any more sugared than anyone else’s doughnuts.

I used to actually go to this particular KK outlet on PdL. Nothing like a dozen fresh glazed with a quart of cold milk!

“What...are you some kind of Communist?”

I don’t think so. I just don’t like those donuts. That will leave more for you.

Haven't eaten a Krispy Kreme in years. Now I'll never eat one again as long as there is a breath left in what is left of my beautiful body..............which has since gone bad.

In the early 2000s, the Los Angeles Kings hockey club had a special promotion...if the team shut out the opposition during the first period (in other words, putting up a “doughnut” on the board), fans could take their ticket stub to Krispy Kreme, for a half dozen free regular glazed.

Since the team was relatively good defensively then, at least in the first period, that promotion didn’t last long.

All that to say, I have never EVER paid for a KK donut. Probably never will. On the rare occasions that I get donuts, it is from the local shop, and even then only certain ones.

It was worse than that, it was called their “Freedom of Choice” promotion and ran through Jan 22nd... the anniversay of Roe v. Wade.

I have a personal boycott on Krispy Kreme (which I love) because of that.

One of my parents’ neighbors is a member of the family who founded KK...she sold her stock about 4 years ago for $10M. Don’t think she was too happy that came out in the Business section of the paper. LOL. Whenever my nephew comes to Mobile from Cincinnati the first thing he does after leaving the airport is stop at KK....he is addicted to those things....

I remember when Krispy Kreme doughnuts expanded into the Chicago area. I bought a dozen and brought them into work. They were soft, gooey, sticky and to my taste altogether yukky. I went back to Dunkin’ Donuts and never bought Krispy Kremes again.

I agree... the few Krispy Kreme doughnuts I've had were mediocre to awful. Why have they supposedly been so popular all these years?

By the third time, you're more like, "Actually, this wad of fat, flour and sugar I'm chewing is kinda gross."

LOL!! Now that's funny! I actually went through the entire range of feelings you described with one doughnut.

That gal sure knows how to facilitate a heart attack.
