Govt-Funded Research Unit Destroyed Original Climate Data

CEI Petitions EPA to Reopen Global Warming Rulemaking

Washington, D.C., October 6, 2009―In the wake of a revelation by a key research institution that it destroyed its original climate data, the Competitive Enterprise Institute petitioned EPA to reopen a major global warming proceeding.

In mid-August the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit (CRU) disclosed that it had destroyed the raw data for its global surface temperature data set because of an alleged lack of storage space. The CRU data have been the basis for several of the major international studies that claim we face a global warming crisis. CRU’s destruction of data, however, severely undercuts the credibility of those studies.

In a declaration filed with CEI’s petition, Cato Institute scholar and climate scientist Patrick Michaels calls CRU’s revelation “a totally new element” that “violates basic scientific principles, and “throws even more doubt” on the claims of global warming alarmists.

CEI’s petition, filed late Monday with EPA, argues that CRU’s disclosure casts a new cloud of doubt on the science behind EPA’s proposal to regulate carbon dioxide. EPA stopped accepting public comments in late June but has not yet issued its final decision. As CEI’s petition argues, court rulings make it clear that agencies must consider new facts when those facts change the underlying issues.

CEI general counsel Sam Kazman stated, “EPA is resting its case on international studies that in turn relied on CRU data. But CRU’s suspicious destruction of its original data, disclosed at this late date, makes that information totally unreliable. If EPA doesn’t reexamine the implications of this, it’s stumbling blindly into the most important regulatory issue we face.”

Among CRU’s funders are the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy – U.S. taxpayers.

Three guesses why they destroyed the data, and the first two don’t count...

The data set revealed that global warming is not taking place at present, and that man is not causing climate change.

Sniff, sniff... the poor lefties... sniff sniff...

It’s about time to bring fraud charges against Al Gore and company.

Complete Caca de Toro. They saw the writing on the wall.

If the data had any merit, they would have been preserved for posterity in the British Museum as priceless historical artifacts in the heroic struggle against capitalism...er, against "catastrophic climate change". Sorry, I can't stop ROTFL.

Of course they did. It is all about money and funding. I know someone who works at a research uni that is well known. They do medical research and he said it is an incredible joke. It is all about getting projects funded even though very little ever gets done. The waste and fraud are stahhering. Not blantant fraud most of the time but close. Things go on that would never happen in private industry.

All of the low-hanging fruit in medical science has long since been picked and eaten. Most of what passes for research nowadays is multivariate torturing of enormous data sets of questionable reliability, hoping that something with p<0.05 will fall into your lap by chance.

Thanks
I have a friend at Harvard and he says Harvard’s research activities (90% Federal funded) dwarf the academic Harvard that everyone familiar with

Lots of this Fed funded Harvard research is done jointly with MIT or other Boston area universities

I knew some people who had been there too. I think the best research is done at Cal Tech and it probably mainly military stuff. Someone I knew at Harvard said the medical school had been wrecked by affirmative action.

People talk about corporate welfare but uni’s are worse.

A few dozen, tops. If the CRU claim they couldn't afford to spend a few thousand bucks archiving all their data, then either they are liars and frauds and their funding should be cut off cold, or they are so comprehensively incompetent at everything they do that their funding should be cut off cold. What these climate fascists at the CRU are attempting to perpetrate is a fraud and a travesty.
