Dell plans to close its Winston-Salem, N.C. factory and lay off about 905 employees by January, the company has confirmed.

The first 600 employees will be released next month, the Round Rock company said. The company said the closure is part of an effort directed at "simplifying operations and improving efficiency."

OBAMAVILLE

Gett’n a head fake, watchin’ msn’s take; All of their pundits oozing foul oil. Clean’n my six gun on my front porch swing. Felling my blood— It’s beginnin’ to boil.

Wasted away again in Obamaville, Searchin’ for a job so I can earn my salt. Some people claim that Bush is to blame, But I know it’s Obama’s fault.

There’s no rhyme or reason, They are all commitin’ treason With nothing to show but a brand new tax or two. But they are real beauties, Despotic duties, how they got passed I haven’t a clue.

Wasted away again in Obamaville, Searchin’ for a job so I can earn my salt. Some people claim that it’s Bush we should blame, Now I think,— hell with them it’s Obama’s fault.

I blew out my flip flop, Stepped on a pop top; Cut my heel, but I just cruise on back home. Because no medical care will the doctors render They say there’s little service I can tender And there’s no need for me to hang on.

Wasted away again in Obamaville Searchin’ for a job so I can earn my salt. Some people claim that Bush is to blame, But I know, it’s my own damn fault. Yes, and some people claim that Bush is to blame, And I know because of my vote it’s my own damn fault.

Isn’t this the plant where NC gave Dell a bunch of tax breaks and other considerations to set up a plant? Will Dell have to pay any of that back to NC now that they’re pulling out?

No, this is more a self-inflicted wound. Dell has been in trouble for a long time now.

Yes, that’s the one; and yes, this would break that agreement with the state because they never met the targeted employment levels.

The market for computer hardware is actually on an uptick right now.

Dell made a bunch of decisions when Mr. Dell was gone that they regretted, and I’m thinking this is one of them.

In addition, the market for PC’s is pretty tough. When you can buy a notebook computer for $300 — and M$ gets $100 of that — you know that there isn’t any profit in these machines now. And worse yet, there is nothing wrong with 6-7 year old computers running XP, so there is no compelling reason to upgrade these computers.

It was 8000 a day last month, how many this month? Any takers? Will those who get jobs at a haunted house for a few weeks be taken off the unemployment numbers?

Sounds like they're going after it.

Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) currently has about 16,000 employees in Central Texas and 76,000 worldwide.

Laying off 905 in NC, out of a worldwide workforce of 76,000. Now way to know what this really means. Dell could easily make up the NC production elsewhere, and they will as soon as their overall demand increases for Christmas, or a better economy.
