ST. LOUIS (AP)—Green Bay Packers fans are known as cheeseheads. Could fans of the St. Louis Rams soon be dittoheads?
Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh said Tuesday he is teaming up with St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts in a bid to buy the Rams, owners of the NFL’s longest losing streak at 14 and just 5-31 since 2007.
In a statement, Limbaugh declined to discuss details, citing a confidentiality agreement with Goldman Sachs, the investment firm hired by the family of former Rams owner Georgia Frontiere to review assets of her estate, including the NFL team.
Limbaugh also declined to discuss other partners that might be involved in the bid, but said he and Checketts would operate the team.

I’m sure there are more players involved in this than just Checketts and Limbaugh. There may be other individuals, like Mike Ditka, Don Shula and Steve Young who may have a stake.

Far different economics at play in the NFL than other pro sports. The big pay day in the NFL is the TV rights and with equal revenue sharing, a small market like Green Bay gets just as much as a mega market like New York or LA. That makes the deciding factor on where to locate a franchise on what local costs of operation are coupled with potential for season ticket sales and corporate box revenues. Some small market teams can make far more profit in a small market like Pittsburgh than they could in a large market like LA. And having a consistent winner always helps regardless of market size.
“Los Angeles is still without a team, and a loophole in the Rams’ lease allows them to move as early as 2014 if the Edward Jones Dome is not deemed among the top quarter of all NFL stadiums. Though just 14 years old, the dome is fast becoming one of the league’s older venues, and getting it into the top quarter seems unlikely.””
Rush would never getinto a deal where the team could be forced to move back to California.
He is trying to support his own home state, and Calif isn’t that.
Also- he sure isn’t going to put himself into the target zone for the Liberals in Sacramento to put some sort of special tax on the Rams.
The state has enough problems trying to get a place for the 49’ers to move to. Raiders have a very harsh crowd to deal with, and many normal people I know who love football gave up years ago going to Raiders games. Just not safe.
The story as I read it was that at her husbands funeral she had Jonathan Winters as an "MC" and she and Winters did a ten minute comedy schtick about two thirds of way through the service. The deceased had wanted only a small private service when he died -- she invited 600 guests and held a LA society event.
There were rumors that she hired a mob hit on him to get the team. His son from a former marriage was the GM and set up to get the team -- but dad was way too smart by half. He had his will set up for a tax dodge to protect the son from getting hit with estate tax and she ended up with 70% of the team and then she fired the son after a modest amount of time ran out. The husband was a great swimmer so, of course, he drowned. She had been married five times prior with a few deaths thrown in.

I’ll bet that Rush is looking for the taxation advantage if it’s as good as what baseball team owners enjoy...
If Rush buys the Rams and they move to LA it’ll be tough for me. I originally became a Chargers fan since they were the only team in southern California when I started following pro ball. Good thing the Rams are in the NFC so I could cheer for both if this happened.
There’s always talk about the Chargers moving to LA, and the Texans according to my buddy who’s an AFC South fanatic.

Actually, Rush’s presence, and more significantly that of others, behind the scenes, with even deeper pockets, solves the main weakness of the St. Louis Rams: interested, committed ownership.
The always unlikely possibility of a return to Anaheim, becomes even more remote.

That could be. All I know is I would hate to see him taking advantage of some municipality to move a team or create a new stadium. Some of those deals are downright criminal to my way of thinking.
Thats because the Rooneys wont ever sell out. And they really wont sell out to a conservative

As you might be able to tell, I don’t follow football much. I just wish that my teams of KC could do a little better than they do. I can remember some glory days in years past...............
While I totally “get” Rush’s love of NFL football, this does concern me in terms of him potentially considering retirement from fulltime broadcasting. His relationship with long-term girlfriend, Kathryn Rogers, his dramatic weight loss, taking up exercise for the first time in his life, increasing frequency of absences from the EIB Network, and now this. It seems to me that his deeper interests are leading him in a new direction for his senior years.
