My wife taught math in Christian Schools. The last two did not renew her contract because she was not touchy feely enough for them.
She was told at the last one her heart was not right. She gave up a good career to work for next to nothing at these schools. She was very good with Male high school students, getting them to grasp facts and figures.
I personally think it was a very loving thing to do.
If that was the case her heart was in the right place, math is not a touchy feely subject and too few students have a grasp of it when graduating HS.
I was once told by a Black teacher that my presentation to the class was not “meaningful for their lives”. In other words the history was presented to them as exciting and facinating but I did not connect to early teen “needs”.
Sowell’s book, INSIDE AMERICAN EDUCATION is great!
Religious based schools can be pretty picky about teachers following the tenets of their respective faiths. On the other hand I’ve heard of Catholic schools headed by atheist priests. (Don’t ask me how the Roman Catholic church tolerates that. I don’t go to one.)
My senior English teacher was a tiny, crabby lady who never smiled. She ruled her class with an iron fist. Even though she stood no more than 5 feet tall, the hulking football team gave her respect. She force fed English Literature and grammar to hundreds of bored students.
She changed my life! I developed a love for learning thanks to her. I learned more in that one class than the previous 3 years in high school. Though pretty much despised at that time, I now count her as a Saint.
An unusual and valuable skill.
I personally think it was a very loving thing to do.
So do I. I hope she doesn't let that experience keep her out of the profession.
It is even more disturbing in light of all the teachers who get in trouble, but only after someone outside complains, for being too "touchy-feely" with the students.
