I reread an extraordinary interview Polanski gave to the novelist Martin Amis in 1979, the year after Polanski went on the run.
The interview originally appeared in Tatler and is collected in Amiss excellent book Visiting Mrs Nabokov. Heres a section of the first quote it contains from Polanski.
If I had killed somebody, it wouldnt have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But fing, you see, and the young girls. Judges want to f young girls. Juries want to f young girls. Everyone wants to f young girls!
Thirty years have passed since Polanski said those words, so hes had time to reconsider them. Whether hes actually done so, we dont yet know. Perhaps he still thinks its true that everyone fancies little girls, and that the press was exaggerating the enormity of his crime, and that all this somehow excuses his behaviour.
Later in the interview, Polanski says he likes Paris, to which hed fled, because its very grown-up.
Unlike the 13-year-old girl with whom he admitted having unlawful sex.

Also Lib-blogger Ezra Klein has a good response to Polanski's flimsy rationalization above: "It was a monstrous and awful offense. In a later interview with Martin Amis, Polanski averred that pedophilia is a universal urge, and the media's sympathy for, and fascination with, his crime came because they fundamentally envied his experience. 'If I had killed somebody,' he explained, 'it wouldnt have had so much appeal to the press.'"
"This is actually damning testimony. If Polanski is right, and yet we still believe in laws against both rape and adults having sex with minors, then it strengthens the need for an ironclad system of punishment that will act as a deterrent against these universal urges. And that means Polanski should go to jail."

Is he reciting the quran?
He should work for ACORN....he could open up his own underage brothel.
He was just being just being sooo cool and clever.
Apparently this may be normal behavior by directors in Hollywood - i.e. a standard practice.
He enticed this child with work and a photo shoot for French Vogue, gave her alcohol and drugs then engaged in the acts after the child repeatedly said no. He then skipped bail and fled.
I hope this thing harms hollywood’s reputation even more. He should be locked up for 10 years.
Gee, do ya think Roman P. is a dirty pedophile?
Like about half of Hollywood?
Quelle surprize !!!
He is a sick sick man and the more he says the more I hate the dirtbag.
One of the problems with underage sexual encounters is that the adult in the situation is in a position of power and authority over the other person because the younger one hasn’t gained autonomy yet. It is the pure exp0loitation of another person by someone using their age and power as a leveraging tool. Ie. not a level playing field. This is yet another reason it is WRONG WRONG WRONG. It is RAPE pure and simple. And it is even more wrong than Rape between two adults because a powerless minor is involved.
They should lock him into jail and throw away the key.
I remain curious as to what prompted the Swiss to arrest Polanski at this time. I can’t believe that in over 30 years, Polanski never once set foot in Switzerland before, or any *other* EU member nation where an outstanding warrant could have resulted in his arrest. Why now?
Spare us your excuses, Polanski.
How re-read the girl’s testimony again, kkthx.
Scumbag. Prison is the least of what this filth deserves.
“Everyone wants to f young girls!
Do the “young girls” want to f old perverts, Roman? Oh right, NO THEY DON’T. That’s why your in this situation, you arrogant pedophile.
He must be hung like a horse, what could the most beautiful Sharon Tate have seen in this ghoul?
Now he’s going to say he is a muslim convert and that molesting little girls is part of his religion.
The Manson Family should have done him instead of Sharon Tate.
What a selfish POS! Wanting something and actually doing it are two different things.
The victim has indicated a sense of forgiveness - which is completely irrelevant. The crime is prosecuted by the State of California on behalf of the people of the state - not the specific victim of the crime. Her opinion is merely that and has no bearing on what should be done in this case.
You know, every time I see a stack of money being moved around in a bank, I imagine myself grabbing it and taking off. Now, if I acted on that urge, would I be punished? Yes. Does that indict me for thinking about it? Absolutely not.
A lot of people see a young, attractive woman walk down the street and look at her. I do it. But if someone said “dude, she’s only 16” it would change my thought patterns completely. Much less 13. But even if she were 30... does it mean it’s OK to rape her? ABSOLUTELY NOT. This is not just about the girl’s age either....

Keep in mind that in sex cases like this, the prosecutor must ask VERY graphic and
direct questions of the accuser so there are no misunderstandings.
He's a pedophile rapist. How many other young girls fell prey in Europe to this fiend?

I would much prefer to see these folks lynched or drawn and quartered -— in the public square. The outrageous justifications that people use to steal the souls of children I find sickening. 15 mins in a room with a baseball bat and an outraged victim’s father??? Maybe that is better yet -— or victim’s Mother
