Cops are hunting [for] a knife-wielding suspect who stabbed a young dad to death after a seemingly minor altercation outside the main post office in Manhattan.
Christopher Gutierrez, 20, bumped into his killer along Eighth Ave. near W. 33rd St. early Sunday evening and, after just a few words were exchanged, the man flew into a rage, police said.
He twice plunged a knife into Gutierrez's chest - and then calmly walked away.
Bleeding profusely, Gutierrez collapsed on the steps of the James A. Farley Post Office, police said. He died soon after.
The victim's mom was devastated that her son, one of nine children, was killed so randomly.
"I don't know how this happened," said Edith Gutierrez, 40.
"Who the hell would just stab him like that, three times in cold blood?" she asked. "This is a monster, and he's still out there."
"It could be anybody's son," she said.
Detectives released photos that they say show the killer walking along Eighth Ave. moments before the savage stabbing.
He is described as a 5-foot-10 African-American, between 25 and 35 years old, weighing about 160 pounds. He was wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans and was carrying a camouflage backpack, police said.
Christopher Gutierrez, a stockboy at a midtown grocery store, was born in the Bronx and grew up in the lower East Side's Jacob Riis Houses, where his stunned family gathered to mourn.
Gutierrez spent time in foster care run by the Green Chimneys agency and went to several high schools without completing his degree.
But Gutierrez, who has a 1-year-old son living in Pennsylvania with the boy's mother, was planning on getting his GED through the Job Corps and then enlisting in the military, his relatives said.
"He was always quiet," said his tearful brother Francis Rivera. "He was not a problem to anybody."
Gutierrez's father is currently incarcerated and one of his brothers just completed a prison sentence for weapon possession, but the victim's relatives said he had turned his back on the temptations of the street.
"All he wanted was to get his life together, get his apartment and work," Rivera said.
The stabbing was witnessed by a German tourist, who showed the pictures to detectives. Investigators yesterday continued to review surveillance video taken from the post office and Madison Square Garden across Eighth Ave.
"Nobody knows who did that?" Rivera said in frustration. "My God, it was 5 o'clock in the afternoon!"
Though arrangements have not been finalized, Gutierrez's funeral will be held at Ortiz Funeral home on First Ave. in the East Village, relatives said.
Anyone with information on the killing is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

Almost seems like they were trying to give the impression the suspect was one of those "right-wing extremist", "military types" the Justice Dept warned us about. They did not show the photo police had released.
Well, we know racial hatred has nothing to do with this, because Obammie the Commie is Pre-ent, and that has healed all the racial wounds. I suppose this is all part of the healing process.
(Don’t trash me. I know this perp is a psycho criminal. But I use it to draw attention to the fact that the intentionally manufactured rage of black Americans has not been quelled, it has been unleashed from their own private lock boxes.)
I won’t trash you. I agree with you.
Just shows you need to tip-toe around certain people. Don’t piss off the savages.
Gun control - making the World safer for criminals.
Looks like a “homeless” nutcase to me. NYC is filling up with them. Look at the sneakers...you can always tell by looking at their shoes. His appear to be oversize and dirty. The only thing that’s unusual for one of NYC’s nutcases is that he has a haircut.
Screw that. People need to learn basic self defense techniques and smack down the savages when they presume to do harm to civilized folk.
When I hear "YES WE CAN!" , I go into defense mode, kinda like hearing a Mooselimb scream "Allah Ackbar!"....
violence waiting to happen.
You said it.
A random knife to the chest from out of the blue has no defense.
I can't see any way a person could have avoided or defended against this kind of attack.
Unless the perp was trained well to use it...I disagree. He might get one stroke in but not three. Being aware of your surroundings at all times while walking the streets of New York is a basic survival necessity.
Besides, this wasn't out of the blue. The victim was in the middle of an altercation with the perp. Wouldn't YOUR senses be at full alert in those circumstances? Mine would.
Since a person can easily get in three plunges of the knife in less than a second, I seriously doubt you could have done a thing.

Full alert? Would you draw on the boy because you had words with him? According to the story, it was a bump and some minor words. From that to three stabs to your heart and you're going to stop it?
Forgive me if I just don't buy it.
“...walking the streets of New York...”
I know that you are not suggesting that one should, but there is no way in the world that I would walk the streets of that insane asylum. I last went to New York City in 1970 and that’s the final time.
I guess Obama can't have him over for a beer..... well maybe a celebratory beer... but not a cozy little foursome.
Forgive me if I just don't buy it.
I grew up in a fairly "nice" neighborhood but there were stabbing, shooting and fights.... the first thing I ALWAYS did and would do is start backing up and always look at hands.... ALWAYS.
It only takes getting hit once with a combination lock tied with a handkerchief swung out of a back pocket to make you very wary. I "bump" into somebody I don't know, I apologize... if they bow up and start looking to "be respected".. then it's coming. So I start backing up and if I'm carrying in my back holster, I pretend to adjust my pants and back away apologizing . If he keeps coming into my bubble then I keep backing up and look at the hands....
Always look at the hands, cause the the face can lie, the body posture can be controlled but make sure you look at the hands...
I think that maybe if I was within 15-20 feet I might have taken one stab wound, but I hope that I'd be able to draw and put at least 5-6 rounds into his chest from 2 feet away as he stabbed me....
Killing somebody with a knife is an up close and personal way to do it... it's always nice to keep distance.. might just give you the tenth of a second you need to defend or escape.
Dude, if you had to worry about that stuff, you didn’t grow up in a nice neighborhood.
I agree. That is a cold blooded murderer walking there, and he thinks way differently than 99.99% of the rest of the people on that sidewalk. Prisons were made for such people, so the rest of us don't have to be in 'condition red' whenever we leave our house.
they say the pic was taken BEFORE the killing. wonder why someone took that pic. as for the backpack, they have to be as specific as possible. if it said ‘US’ on it, then give that info out. i’m gonna guess some cop is gonna recognize this perp and he’ll be locked up by the end of the week.
The Daily News article says it was taken before. The NY Post says it was after.

I'm NOT defending or excusing the knife wielding whack job but Gutierrez was not an Angel. It sounds like two guys arguing over being "dissed".
Thank you Rap Music and the Thug Culture. You're doing a bang up job shaping American Culture.
And Obama and his criminal enterprise currently occupying our government AIN'T helping. His comments and Eric Holder's inactions on Black Crime, like the Black Panthers, are emboldening Black Street Thugs to thumb their nose at society and the Law.
