MANCHESTER, Ky. (AP) - When Bill Sparkman told retired trooper Gilbert Acciardo that he was going door-to-door collecting census data in rural Kentucky, the former cop drawing on years of experience warned: "Be careful."
The 51-year-old Sparkman was found hanged from a tree near a Kentucky cemetery and had the word "fed" scrawled on his chest, a law enforcement official said Wednesday, and the FBI is investigating whether he was a victim of anti-government sentiment.
"Even though he was with the Census Bureau, sometimes people can view someone with any government agency as 'the government.' I just was afraid that he might meet the wrong character along the way up there," said Acciardo, who directs an after-school program at an elementary school where Sparkman was a frequent substitute teacher. The Census Bureau has suspended door-to-door interviews in rural Clay County, where the body was found, until the investigation is complete, an official said.
The law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss the case and requested anonymity, did not say what type of instrument was used to write the word on the chest of Sparkman, who was supplementing his income doing Census field work. He was found Sept. 12 in a remote patch of Daniel Boone National Forest and an autopsy report is pending.

From the reports on some sites the sign did not say
“Fed” but “F’ed”
Its a very hugh and series difference
Did you know that an elephant’s sex organs are on its feet?
(If he steps on you, you’re F’ed]...
lol.
“Its a very hugh and series difference”
Maybe. Let me check with my epopel.
Poor guy. Prayers.
Quick! Call the “Southern Poverty Law Center”.
I’m sure whoever killed him listens to ‘talk radio’!!
Ropes kills. It should be illegal to own a rope!
(Condolences to the family and friends of this unfortunate census taker.)
“Countdown to 0 ratings” will be blaming Michelle Bachman.
ROFLOL...that is SO bad.
How could he have been doing Census work in “a remote patch of Daniel Boone National Forest?”
It stinks to high heaven, frankly. I’ll bet my bottom dollar this guy wasn’t killed by “anti government” types.
More likely he stumbled across some illicit pot growers who offed him.
"I'm from the US government and .... say, what's that smell?"
First of all, this is a horrible and tragic thing. But my guess would be that he stumbled onto something he wasn’t supposed to encounter. He’s the victim of bad, evil people, not “anti-government” sentiment, no matter who the perpetrators turn out to be. It sounds like the move is on to make the government a new protected class. I sincerely hope no one uses this man’s death to gain political points.
I watched a History Channel program on “hillbillies” (the host was Billy Ray Cyrus, I remember) that pot growing is now the big cash crop in Appalachia and that national parks, national forests, etc. are prime growing ground. Maybe “fed” refers to that?
The site is in an area where bad guys grow pot in the forest.
How about simply finding out who committed the crime? The motive is irrelevant, given that this is murder.
Eek, you beat me to it! Sorry about that.
