Israel promised Russia it would not launch an attack on Iran, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview aired on Sunday in which he described such an assault as "the worst thing that can be imagined."
Medvedev denied Moscow was backing Iran but said it had the right to supply defensive weapons and said sanctions against Tehran should only be used as a last resort.
An attack would lead to "a humanitarian disaster, a vast number of refugees, Iran's wish to take revenge and not only upon Israel, to be honest, but upon other countries as well,"
"But my Israeli colleagues told me that they were not planning to act in this way and I trust them."
"Our task is not to strengthen Iran and weaken Israel or vice versa but our task is to ensure a normal, calm situation in the Middle East," Medvedev said.
Analysts have been watching for Russian concessions on Iran after the White House on Thursday canceled plans to site elements of a missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic
Medvedev said he was hopeful Moscow's relations with Washington would improve under President Barack Obama and described the chances of an agreement on a new treaty to reduce strategic nuclear weapons by year-end as "quite high."

Wow... We all know the imagination of Russian leaders.
A Russian client, armed with Russian tech, being reduced to rubble on Russia’s border? Not gonna make the Kremlin look too good either internally or externally.
I bet the Israelis could think of something worse.
So can I.
If Israel says “he lies!” then they will be accused of “Warmongering”.
Gotta hand it to Satan. He’s got some smart people working for him.
Rethink the run up
1) The “Arctic Sea” incident, probably related to Russian arms sales to Iran.
2) Israeli Defense Secretary Ehud Barak saying that Iran is not an existential threat to Israel.
3) Bibi visiting the cremlin.
4) Obama scrapping missile defense.
5) Nutjob saying that Iran doesn’t need nukes, while Khamenei again calling Zionism a cancer.
6) Everyone acting as if all is fine.
It’s really startling. Something is cooking between Moscow, Tehran, DC and Jerusalem. If some deal has been worked out... what could it be?
Crappola,
Hit Iran and hit them hard.
Israel should do whatever it needs to in order to guarantee its national security against a regime that has openly claimed (on many occasions) that it would "wipe Israel off the planet".
For whom, exactly?
“Iran’s wish to take revenge and not only upon Israel, to be honest, but upon other countries as well,”
Hey Russia, does your dog bite?
Two groups of non-Christian foreigners?
“I bet the Israelis could think of something worse.
So can I.”
Does it involve a nuclear device dropped on a certain object of worship?
The Messiah isn't going to take this with a kind demeanor.
It's not nice to fool with the Messiah!
Zat... iz not my dog!
0 can be as submissive as he wishes to people who have sworn to destroy us and Israel, but he’s getting nothing in return from them.
A mushroom cloud over Tel Aviv is the worst thing the Israelis can imagine.
Now why would any "analyst" do that? I has been well documented by the media that the change in missile shield plans had nothing to do with Russia...and besides, Russia has already said "thanks, we will continue talking...while you disarm..."
