Plain and Simple, Deeds Stumbles In N.Va. Debate
The Washington Post ^ | September 18, 2009 | Robert McCartney

Posted on 09/18/2009 8:22:23 AM PDT by St. Louis Conservative

If you're a candidate for governor coming to debate in Northern Virginia, you'd better be able to say simply and plainly how you'd raise money to repair and improve the roads. Democratic State Sen. R. Creigh Deeds (Bath) failed to do that Thursday. In fact, he bungled it pretty badly. He managed to sound both vague and two-faced about the most important issue in the race for the Washington region.

It's too bad, because as governor Deeds would be more likely to actually fix the roads than his Republican opponent, former attorney general Robert F. McDonnell. That's because Deeds is willing to raise taxes for transportation, while McDonnell isn't, and some kind of tax increase is the only way to do the job.

But Deeds certainly didn't explain that clearly Thursday. When asked directly by moderator David Gregory of NBC News whether he would raise taxes if necessary in the current economic climate, Deeds said: "No, I'm not going to raise taxes. But I am the only person on this dais who will sign a transportation plan that raises new money."

Huh? When I and other reporters pressed him afterward to clarify, he said he meant only that he wouldn't raise taxes for the state's general fund, which pays for a broad range of services, including education and law enforcement. That clearly left open the possibility that he'd raise taxes for the transportation fund, which is separate.

Another grammatically challenged "journalist".

When they start their "news" with a fraudulent premise, there is no need to bother reading any additional propaganda.

Yes, WP, there are LOTS of other alternatives to raising taxes. For example, realizing roads are a core responsibility, the State of VA could cut OTHER, non- essential spending (i.e. mass transit schemes, pay-hikes and bonuses for govt bureaucrats, new hiring plans etc) to free up funds for what the Sate is SUPPOSE to do at the expense of what politicians WANT to do.

Translation: “If Deeds would just come out and say he will raise taxes, we will stop at nothing to support him and demonize McConnell. He’s just not giving us anything to work with right now.”

Couldn’t agree more - and may I add, grandfathering/reducing the salaries/not providing sumptuous housing for state-funded college/university profs, etc as well as using prison population for roads projects/maintenance - and having an overall attitude that it’s not “free money” that you are spending but it’s THE PEOPLES’ MONEY!!!!!!!!

Kind of curious why there is such desperation to link Republicans and Democrats together as enemies of the 09-12 movement? Seems to me this is an attempt to diver attention from the real problem rather then facing the problem squarely. Seems to be there is an unwillingness to look at the real enemies in this desperation to defend Democrats and smear Republicans.

All elected Democrats, 100% of them, are at odds with the stated agenda of the 09-12 Movement. Some Republicans are enemies of the 09-12 movement, Most are not. A number of them, Like Mike Pence SPOKE to the 09-12 Rally.

So how about people focus on the REAL enemy instead of fraudulent trying to paint Democrats and Republicans with the same brush?

Except that McDonnell actually has a PLAN to fix transportation, while Deeds does NOT have a plan.

And McDonnell has a plan for how to handle the money without raising taxes as well. Deeds does not, because Deeds does not have a plan.

I looked at that tape of Deeds. The double spin he was pulling is exactly why he will not win. He will raise the good people of Virginia’s taxes. These politicians believe they can say anything and voters will just buy it.

‘I have no plan to raise taxes but I will raise money.’ Oh man, is this going to be fun. The AG is heavily favored in polling - that will help McDonnell.

Ken Cuccinelli (AG candidate - and currently Commonwealth Senator from NoVA) is one of the finest politicians I've met. He is a no BS conservative including Second Amendment supporter that makes no apologies and still gets elected in the most liberal part of the Commonwealth. I look for good things to come from this man. Check out his 20,000+ voting record in the Senate.
