And politicians of all stripes seem to want more $$$ for education and teachers. We’ve got to get back to basics before another generation is lost.

But did they learn important stuff such as how to put a condom on a banana?

Bananas are so nineties. They now learn on cucumber.

How could they not know Lincoln?

Lincoln? Ha! Everybody knows it was Kennedy.

I think it was Lincoln, Ford, and Mercury.

Oklahoma public high school students, eh? Well they’re young yet. Most of ‘em aren’t a day over twenty-five. Give ‘em time.

Whatever, Obama’s our first REAL president anyway, right?

I'm most worried about the 7% that think Obama wrote the Declaration of Independence.

***No, Oklahoma is doomed. Remind me not to hire grads from Oklahoma as well.***

Years ago, when our plant was built, people from Texas came up to staff it.

They were thrilled that the Oklahoma schools were much better than those in Texas!

Meanwhile, Oklahomans were doing their best to get their children in Arkansas schools because they were even better!

Where do you get the 75% in the posting title that can’t name the first U.S. President, when the first paragraph/sentence says one in four can’t name the first President?

Wow.

I can remember in Grade School how EVERYONE knew the answer to that question. Even in High School, it was rare to find someone who didn’t know.

I guess condom usage and diversity training is more important.

Counting noses is a bad way to run anything, because most people are ignorant and are largely incapable of making decisions on the basis of reason. By contrast, the aristocrats is trained from birth to rule. Allowing ignorant amateurs to decide matters of state is like putting a group of toddlers at the helm of a guided missile cruiser. We here in the States are lucky in that the elite that formed the nation knew this to be true, and wisely insulated the people from the levers of political power.

Yet even with this isolation, allowing the common person a say in government has resulted in disaster. The common man operates almost entirely on the basis of emotion, and is easy for a demagogue to to manipulate. (Case in point: President Obama.) Rule on the basis of the "will of the people" is in reality rule by the most skillful demagogue.

As for atrocities: no king or emperor in history ever shed blood on the scale of a government by the people. A king's power is limited by the oath he swears to god; in a representative government, vox populi is vox dei, and as such is without limit. Hitler was, after all, an elected leader; Stalin is still loved by millions; the rule of both Mao Zedong and the Dear Leader were and are based largely upon the willing cooperation of millions of "jes' plain folks'. Even in America, we shed innocent blood on a scale that makes the worst excesses of the cruelest czar look like Sunday school. Get back to me when you find a king who allowed fifty million innocent babies to be legally murdered during his reign.

Only reprinting the title as it was printed in the article. The mods would delete it otherwise. :)

Of course they know George Washington. They just know him as the dead white slave owner on the dollar bill.
