NATO-led forces are investigating the death of four Marines in eastern Afghanistan after their commanders reportedly rejected requests for artillery fire in a battle with insurgents, the Pentagon said on Wednesday. Tuesday's incident was "under investigation" and details remained unclear, press secretary Geoff Morrell told a news conference. A McClatchy newspapers' journalist who witnessed the battle reported that a team of Marine trainers made repeated appeals for air and artillery support after being pinned down by insurgents in the village of Ganjgal in eastern Kunar province. The U.S. troops had to wait more than an hour for attack helicopters to come to their aid and their appeal for artillery fire was rejected, with commanders citing new rules designed to avoid civilian casualties, the report said.

“’We’re pinned down:’ 4 U.S. Marines die in Afghan ambush”
Fantabulous! A BiG Thank You for working so hard on this!
bump!
Do you mean the truck bomb that blew up the Marine barracks? if so that is a reflection of the garrison security not a lack of air and artillery support.

Amen! God bless our soldiers, and thank you to all who have served our country.
Just want to fit this in here, a propos of nothing at all.
Remember when the USS Cole was bombed off of Aden, South Yemen?
After the bomb-laden zodiac hit, there were deaths and there was a real chance that the ship would sink. The men knew very clearly they were under deadly attack.
Men rushed topside to guard against the possibility of follow-up attack, of course.
Do you know they were forbidden to have live ammunition? I’m serious.
I don’t mean that there had been left-over orders for no ammo —I’m saying that immediately following the attack the Captain specifically forbade possession of live ammo by anyone on deck IN ORDER TO PREVENT ANY UNWARRANTED AGGRESSION OR ACCIDENT. The men were wildly brandishing and waving their weapons around, and no way had any way of firing them.
That’s the kind of discipline and inertia that existed at least at that point, and I think we’re seeing that a bit here, too.
Oh —the USMC explosion in Lebanon? The guards at the gate did not have live ammo in their rifles, and that was for the same reason —to protect against the possibility that there might be an accident or unwarranted arms discharge.
I have heard that the enemy somehow learned that the guards did not have live ammo, but I don’t know if that was true.
Clinton crap? Was it like this under Bush?
They keep saying 4 Marines but it was three dead Marines and a dead Sailor.
There was also US Army wounded and 8 dead Afghan soldiers and police and a civilian Marine interpreter.
This was a combined operation of 13 American trainers and about 80 Afghans.
IMHO, considering it was a LT, a Corpsman, a GySgt and a SSgt who were killed after their calls for fire were not supported due to rules of engagement, I suspect their judgment call on the ground was far better placed than those who overturned them. On principle, even an NCO and three PFCs should still have been supported, but strongly appears there was a considerable more seasoned wherewithal making those calls for fire. Don’t count on meeting reenlistment goals in that battalion.

Right on.
It doesn't give due respect Ansel.
Thanks for the ping. Our military no longer has the support of the administration. These are sad and dangerous times.
God bless our military.
Very sad!
If either of my boys are killed or wounded due to some left wing loon ROEs there will be hell to pay!! I will hold someone responsible!
Reason after reason to end this chirade of leadership in Washington. The left alway holds up Vietnam as an example of the defeat of imperial America when in fact that war was a democrat debacle. We don’t need another planned failure. Get the troops out or let them win!
Prayers for the families of those fine young Americans!
