Conservative David Frum, having made a bad name for himself with a crusade against Rush Limbaugh in the leftwing press, has now taken out after Glenn Beck in a column titled "GOP Surrenders to Beck's Mob Rule." (Frum is an armchair aristocrat). I don't have a big quarrel with Frum's view that Beck's view of Cass Sunstein is "over the top" or off target. Conservatism is and should be a big tent where people can disagree in their judgments of issues and others. Frum is right that Sunstein is not a raving leftist. On the other hand he is not a critic of raving leftists such as Van Jones either. In fact he is happy to be part of their team.
Moreover, Sunstein has some ideas that are as dangerous as Beck says they are. But this is not a disagreement about interpretations. My real quarrel with Frum is that he denigrates Beck ("mob rule" indeed) and expresses the hope that Beck will soon be gone. This is more than over the top on Frum's part. It is a betrayal of the conservative cause (much as his unseemly attack on Limbaugh was, too). Without voices like Beck's and Limbaugh's -- and Ann Coulter's for that matter -- the conservative cause and the cause of this country would be hugely damaged. On the other hand, if Frum's website were to fold, nobody would notice.
Our country is under assault by a determined, deceitful and powerful left which will stop at nothing to realize its goals.

At the risk of being totally flamed, I have to say that Glenn Beck was self serving today. I turned him off to watch CSPAN. After months of positive effort I think he just bombed this day.
Or if it stays open, nobody would notice....notice a theme here....
Frum needs to spend his time and energy taking on dems...
I appreciate so much what Beck has done but was disappointed the rally speakers were not the focus of his program. Oh well, can’t hit every pitch out of the ballpark and no doubt beck will continue fighting the good fight.
Thats my favorite line of this article...Frum is a jerk, so who cares..
I agree with you on that - this was a day to showcase the Tea Party people - not to showcase himself. It was a miss. The great stuff he's done with ACORN gives him a pass... but he needs to know when it's his turn to move OFF the stage for an hour or so...
I totally disagree with your statement that Glenn bombed today. Not everything will meet with our approval but this guy is right on target. This country is being taken over and people like Glenn will assist in bringing it back to the people. Any time someone takes the lead, there are some that will get mad because they couldn’t do the same thing.
“Without voices like Beck’s and Limbaugh’s — and Ann Coulter’s for that matter — the conservative cause and the cause of this country would be hugely damaged. On the other hand, if Frum’s website were to fold, nobody would notice.”
ouch
The Left is doing what the Left always does—attack the person, not the ideas!
The thing that burns me up is that we have these, shall we say “condescending conservatives” like Frum, trying to tell us that what we do and feel is WRONG. Patriotism, and love of God and country is never wrong, Mr. Frum. Go to Europe. You’ll be happy there.
Perhaps a Republican, but far from a conservative.
Ditto - I thought it was a real disconnect - he could have covered the rally and do his talking points this coming week. That’s what I expected when he said he would be “covering it” from NYC.
Beck had excessive commentary on the 9-12 Tea Party. If you watched just Fox, you wouldn’t hear any of the speakers.
Need some Brie w/that Whine Davy?
Pray for America
Who or what is a “Frum?” Is it perhaps a disambiguation of “scrum?”
He had some good guests on, but Beck talked over them too much.
Also, Beck ALSO seemed to “apologize for America” much like Obama, in bringing up all the “intervention” by America, in the governments of other countries over the years.
Beck also had to go on the “this is not a Republican or Democrat” issue a bit too much.
YES, there are some courageous moderate and conservative Democrats out there, but “throw them ALL out” -— as a strategy for 2010 is STUPID!
Beck let me down.
I turned to C-Span as well.
(Fox online also sucked, they had the audio of a 9-11 memorial most of the day, but the video of the Tea Party!)
Frum is more known to the denizens of the D.C. cocktail party circuits than he is to national conservatives. And I’m afraid he gets most of his ideas and positions by osmosis from the libs who dominate those gatherings.
Fitting in with a certain social circle and intellectual class seems to be mighty important to Frum’s type. And to him I’ll add David Brooks, Peggy Noonan, McCain, Miss Lindsey Graham, and numerous others.
Glenn has made clear that Sunstein is not a commie like Jones. The problem with him is his kook ideas about animal rights, like giving attorneys to pigs and banning hunting.
Why cant these guys admit that Sunstein has some really wacko ideas?
I agree with those disappointed with Glenn's afternoon show today. I thought he was going to cover the events in DC but he hardly gave any attention to what was going on there.
I'm not going to flame you. I just don't agree with your conclusion.
I don't think Beck was self-serving. I think he is floundering because he can't figure out how to go forward from here. He wants to clean things up peacefully (a la Ghandi, or MLK), and the people he's trying to clean up aren't about to go peacefully.
I agree with you about Beck today. I was hoping for more focus on the march, perhaps some better guests. But Frum is major annoyance. One thing this movement doesn’t need is a “nuanced conservative” trying to be the “smartest one in the room.”
