I do find flaws in the free trade philosophy, but before we resort to tariffs, we need to take a look at other things as well. I think we need to reduce the red tape, taxes, environmental regulations and so on so we can make it friendlier to produce tires (and other things) here in the U.S. I admit that maybe tariffs are part of the equation but they alone will not bring our jobs back, we need to consider the other factors I mentioned as well. Trouble is, since we have the Zero Administration, they will not do that at all.

I think that this is the first thing that I agreed with this communist on! We have manufacturing plants sitting idle in this country while we bring in cheap goods from over seas. Of course the unions helped drive out our manufacturing base, greed was right in there pushing also.

I guess they were so busy teaching about the Great Man (FDR) they forgot to mention Smoot-Hawley in that private Hawaiian school that The One went to back in the ‘70s.

Obama only wants one thing, for America to be destroyed, split apart, invaded, take your pick, he is manufacturing a situation of infuriating China, and that is NOT a good idea.

Oh good... Someone who admitted in more than one interview that "tax cuts for the rich" increase revenue to the government, but he was going to raise taxes, even though it reduced revenue to the government because it was "more fair." Someone who knows nothing about economics nor markets, but he's good as a agitator. High tariffs worked out so well just before the Great Depression, didn't they? Plus, as an added bonus, he slapped those high tariffs on the number one purchaser of our debt, providing the cash that he needs to create his little Utopian society.

The World Court will have their first law suit against Obama. They always attacked Bush for ignoring it. Watch what they do now. LOL...A'hats!

The Chinese are not going to be pleased. They have already lectured Obama on the U.S. Constitution which they understand better than he does. This tariff will kill jobs in the retail sector to save a few dozen union jobs at a couple US plants. Most of these tires are actually U.S. owned or partly owned Chinese plants. The tariffs will simply cut off sales to the Chinese and move it to other countries within months. He will have to tariff them all. All of them will retaliate.

To little and way to late. How about a well thought out policy instead of stupid knee jerk reactions? Oh well let the trade wars begin. Hope we win.

Wasn’t a trade war with Japan ultimately what caused us to go to war with them?
It is I think what caused them to attack Hawaii.

Good move. Level the playing field. Put the same costs on foreign manufacturers that are mandated for America manufacturers. If American companies have to pay extra environmental, health care, taxes and regulatory costs then put the same dollar load on foreign companies. It’s like States do on equalize sales taxes with compensating use taxes.

All for retaining American jobs, but China is essentially our banker and we just pissed our banker off. Wise move?

To all those who want to shut down trade with China, I would say that you have no business criticizing liberals. What you are telling me is that I am not free to choose (a little Friedman lingo) the products I want to buy. In fact, you are saying the government knows better what I should buy than I do. Congrats, you're on the road to thinking like a Democrat.

I also reject "Buy American." This is the tired, wrong notion that buying your own country's products creates jobs and prosperity. Why, oh, why won't this idea die?! If you really believe this, then Hong Kong is poor and Africa (which has the highest tariffs) is rich. Switzerland and Monaco must also be dirt poor.
