President Barack Obama on Friday slapped punitive tariffs on all car and light truck tires entering the United States from China in a decision that could anger the strategically important Asian powerhouse but placate union supporters important to his health care push at home.
Obama had until Sept. 17 -- next week -- to accept, reject or modify a U.S. International Trade Commission ruling that a rising tide of Chinese tires into the U.S. hurts American producers. A powerful union, United Steelworkers, blames the increase for the loss of thousands of American jobs.

What brand cell phone do you have? What brand car do you have? What brand tires do you have? What brand computer are you using to post here on FR?
Why do you support “treasonous” companies with your dollar?
What’s treasonous is that we have demonized the profit motive here in the US. Making an honest living by being smart and running a business is now evil; only being a “union member” or a Government worker is considered “pure”. You have no right to profit here, because it’s “evil” in the eyes of the public. Corporations making “outrageous” profits, wealthy people buying nice cars and houses...
The problem is not “outsourcing”; the problem is WHY outsourcing happens. Outsourcing is the symptom, not the cause. The cause is that we - as a nation - have decided it is wrong to make a buck, it is wrong to make profit, it is wrong for the investors and owners of a company to make a profit on their risk when the “common man” only earns $30/hour, and it is wrong to do anything that may damage any living thing (tree, bird, fish) out there.
As long as that’s the general opinion in the American mind, and as long as our Government overlords continue with that populist muck-raking, then outsourcing will continue.
Making a buck is not evil; if you cannot make a buck here, then in fact it WOULD BE evil to simply lose money here! There is no stewardship. Making your profit is good, and grows economies.
We buy products from China, from mainly US-owned subsidiaries in China, because otherwise there is no profit and it all closes down. You cannot build affordable computers or tires with $30/hour labor costs. You cannot sell $90/pr jeans.
Open YOUR eyes, see your own hypocrisy, and see the real reason companies outsource. It’s not treason - it’s called survival.
Actually I’ve got two bona-fide American made products on your list.
Do you?
I’ve got my cash out of my USD positions, I’m in EUR and GBP.
And you live in China.
At least you’re consistent.
And those products would be?
What about the computer or the cell phone?
And you're not. You're the hypocrite. Tell me when you have a completely built-in-the-USA computer or cell phone or car. Please. Until then, you're "patriotism" is hollow, and your position is shifting sand.
The Chinese must not have funneled enough money into democrat coffers lately...
Thanks for saving me the time to type that out!
And you’ll have to get a real job.
That’s the reason you always spam about free trade.
I do find flaws in the free trade philosophy, but before we resort to tariffs, we need to take a look at other things as well. I think we need to reduce the red tape, taxes, environmental regulations and so on so we can make it friendlier to produce tires (and other things) here in the U.S. I admit that maybe tariffs are part of the equation but they alone will not bring our jobs back, we need to consider the other factors I mentioned as well. Trouble is, since we have the Zero Administration, they will not do that at all.
We are doing backwards. We should get our manufacturing back on track. Then stick it to China. Currently we are stuck with the same problems GM had with the unions.
Enough wordsmithing.
Commence the trade war.
so, WHICH brands of Tires INCLUDE “chink tires” within their offerings?
I see, you cannot answer about the products. I am willing to bet that your cell phone, your computer, your car, and your tires use Chinese materials or were made in China. Name the price.
See, I WORK for a living, I’m not a sponge like you (or your fellow union goons). I am a free man, answer to no one. I am an independent consulting engineer in acoustics, have worked for US (ATL, Microsoft, a dozen other) companies, Asian (Medison, Sony, a dozen more) companies, European (Philips, Airbus, others), etc.
I work for the job that pays the best and is the most interesting. I hold no allegiance to a company or money-source; it is myself, and myself alone.
Can you say that? Do you depend upon those evil, rich, wealthy white men just preying on all the innocent American citizens? Does someone else give you a paycheck, determine how much you will earn, what kind of benefits you have? How is that different than the old USSR where the State dictated your salary and compensation, and the State gave you your set of benefits?
You are part of the problem, as much as the Communists in DC trying to take over. Hyper-patriots such as yourself will cause a US downfall just as surely as Obammunists will. You cannot think straight because your political ideology has blinded you.
I bet you think that China’s still communist too, don’t you? As someone who lives every-other month over here in China (I’m here Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sep, Nov), and every other month in the US, I get to see both systems.
Right now, there’s a bit of a difference but the US is rapidly becoming Communist; China’s a fascist oligarchy with fewer “communist” ideas and laws and programs that the US has!
Slurp up your patriotic pride, ignore the log in your own eye so you can rave and spit about the speck in your brother’s eye.
So tell us, oh great patriot: make and model of your cell phone, computer (that you use to post your high-and-mighty screeds against free trade), car, and tires.
Come clean, or be shown to be the hypocritical raving lunatic you really are.
I think that this is the first thing that I agreed with this communist on! We have manufacturing plants sitting idle in this country while we bring in cheap goods from over seas. Of course the unions helped drive out our manufacturing base, greed was right in there pushing also.
“See, I WORK for a living, Im not a sponge like you (or your fellow union goons).”
-
Nice red herring, red boy. Never joined a union in my life.
You however. Live in one.
Come on man!
I can remember when you could disagree ` but not be disagreeable....
