The Coast Guard main office would not have known about a exercise called by the local commander on the scene. These are just little proficiency exercises and do not involve anyone except the group of boats. There were four of them.

I really don't understand why you or anyone would be blaming the LEO's or the Guard for doing what they are paid to do.

The culprit here is the jerk who bought a scanner, tuned into a protected radio channel and misinterpreted what he heard, then passed that on to the media who aired it inappropriately.

Look, even though training is a must, it is odd that they’d train at that time, on this day, around the time of the memorials. It’s no better, really, than Obama sending one of his planes to buzz Manhattan, except on this day, it’s even worse. So some Coastie is for sure going to take the fall for this, whether or not he (or she) should. Any training could have waiting until 9/12 or later. Any training of this sort SHOULD have waited until a less sensitive time.

On the other hand, the populace is again reminded of the ongoing threats against this country.

If there’s anything to blame the Coast Guard for, it’s using unsecure channels for tactical communication. Shouldn’t they have something like SINCGARS for this?

Yeah, and AF1 flyover was also a training mission. Gotcha.
