Stephen Farrell, a New York Times reporter held captive by militants in northern Afghanistan, was freed in a military commando raid early Wednesday, but his Afghan interpreter was killed during the rescue effort.

They must be getting some complaints. Mention of the commando was originally a brief blurb in paragraph four, then it moved up to three. Now I see it’s in paragraph two.
I wonder if it’ll make the headline? I wont hold my breath.

No such courtesy for the family of the wounded/dead Marine recently. But when its one of their own, no request is too great. This makes me sick at my stomach. I am very glad Americans didnt take part in this, I wouldnt lift my finger to rescue this guy.

They’ll risk their lives for you. They’ll die for you. Because that’s the type of men they are. And they don’t expect thanks. They don’t expect gratitude.
But when one of them does it, for the rest of your life, everything you do is that much more important. That much more precious. That much more sacred or it should be.
Mr Farrell - don’t think you have to change what you’re doing because this brave man died so you could do what you do, whether he agreed with it or not. But you’ve got a duty now and so do your colleagues to make sure nobody ever forgets why you can do it.
You owe it to them never to forget. Never to let anybody else forget.

Why waste the effort, not to mention the lives, to save this guy?
Why was a Times Reporter considered worth freeing? There was an opportunity missed to decrease the enemy rolls by one bad guy.
Why save any reporters, none of them are worth one soldier.
The Taliban were only going to do what I’d like to do to some of them.

Why are we using military resources to rescue collaborators?
As a Marine Corps veteran, it is my job to constantly let all other military services know that they are second best (deep down in your hearts, you know its true :-P ). That’s even more so for other countries’ military members. I do this with glee and determination, and all in good fun. Sometimes, we have to put that all aside and give credit where credit is due, though.
The British troops that conducted the raid that freed the NY Slimes, er I mean Times, reporter yesterday showed how it’s done. Kudos to them, and condolences on the loss of another brave soldier in the process. Those willing sacrificing for those unworthy seems to be a real trend lately.

The translator who got killed was a Times employee. I want to see his body ~ and I need a list of names and addresses of his closest relatives.
