which disables the nation's electrical grid
Bzzzzt!

Any aggressors able to 'hurl' a device as high and central as it would need to be are going to have had that 'launch' detected and the necessary precautions THEN executed to 'island' the various service areas into independent generation-load centers ... the biggest problem is the highly interconnected 'grid' system we have today that tend to collapse if any big upsets hit them. Independent, "islanded", they can survive, and there will be time to execute that maneuver.

Sounds real uplifting ... read it before bed and never sleep again.

I haven't read the book so take anything I say with a grain of salt.

I have, however, worked with military equipment that is designed to work in an EMP environment so I do have some background in this area. In the case of a military radio the only thing that is required to provide EMP protection is a couple of diodes shunting the antenna and possibly other inputs. That's it. That's all you need.

Also, the way an EMP pulse is delivered is via a high altitude nuclear blast and the effectiveness of the pulse will fall off as the square of the distance from the point of detonation. I'm really doubtful that a single weapon could affect unprotected electronic equipment over the whole United States.

And lastly, it is not in the cards that the North Koreans or the Iranians or their like are going to have the technology to actually build and deliver an EMP weapon that would have to be detonated high over the U.S. The Chinese could do it. They probably have EMP weapons. The Russians could as well. But we are (or were) well on our way to building a defense system that can protect us against such an attack. And also note that much of our military gear is designed to withstand an EMP attack.

Bottom line: Relax. Have a beer. Enjoy watching Van Jones and his former boss squirm and starting thinking about which Czar will be next.

I have just read that book not too long ago. It is a very good book because I think it is realistic in ways most aren’t.

I had tears at certain points. Not that I would admit it to anyone I know.

A perspective with a little more science and engineering behind it:

nextbigfuture.com/2008/08/electromagnetic-pulse-risk-not-total.html

The 1962 bomb affected street lamps, circuit breakers, cars and radio stations in Hawaiian, 800 miles to the north. Still, even there the effect was far from comprehensive. Los Alamos National Laboratory physicist Michael P. Bernardin said that "the 30 strings of failed streetlights [from Starfish Prime's EMP] represented only about one percent of the streetlamps on Oahu at the time."

And noted physicist Richard Garwin said the Starfish detonation "had barely noticeable effects on military systems."

One of the worst books I’ve ever read.

strangely enough, gunpowder, mre’s and sharpened metal will continue to work as advertised.

new york and the northeast corridor might turn into a headless chicken ranch... but other areas of the country will be fine.

I wonder if this book is anything like Alas Babylon?

I've read that book at least 15 times and it still scares the hell outa me when I read it.

If you're interested, buy Alas Babylon here.

Have not read the book but have done considerable research on EMP as has our government. There have been numerous tests and they found that most cars will not be affected depending on the size and distance above the earth but the grid will go down permanently due to the loss of nearly irreplaceable (in the short term of a few years or less) the huge transformers. After a week it won’t matter anyway because it takes electricity to transport and pump fuel and cars won’t be going anywhere.

Are we in danger of an EMP strike. YES. From Iran. Here’s why. If you only had a handful of nukes and used one or two nukes to take out a couple of our major cities it would be a waste of nukes. Why not put a half dozen into orbit, detonate simultaneously and take the old US of A out of the world equation. In a few months 80 percent of the population would be dead.

In the headlines the other day it was reported that Iran is making huge strides on rocket technology to launch satellites. It said they are working at a “feverish” pace.

I think an EMP will take us out sooner or later, probably sooner. Better get some seeds and canning jars.

Another book on the same EMP theme is Lights Out.

It's long, but free all over the web. Just Google "Lights Out David Crawford."

So who is telling the military about this and everyone else who should know and do something?

Who?

Aahh.. I really enjoyed the TV show based on this book. It was called ‘Dark Angel’ and it starred the incredibly hot Jessica Alba. I was sorry it only lasted a couple of seasons (if that).

BTTTFL...

IMHO...a CME is what this country/world really needs to be concerned with. This scenario WOULD happen if the 1859 event were to happen today.

I hate it when dogs die in novels. I kept flipping back to the overleaf description of the author, which said he lived with his daughter and their pack of yellow dogs, to reassure myself that this will just fiction, and the dogs were fine.

When I finished the book this weekend, I bought three large bags of high quality dog food and put them in 2 metal garbage cans for deep storage. That will be about 4 1/2 months kibble for my yellow dogs to survive on, but I will be putting aside more, until I have a year's worth of food for them.

I beg God we have enough time, money, and for me, space, to keep enough vital stores for all of us.

Sunday night, I started reading On the Beach. I had it for years, but postponed opening it. The light particles of nuclear diffusion are making their way to Australia.I'm only on page 34, and already I am so depressed, I don't think I can finish it.

From suggestions on this thread, I ordered Alas Babylon this weekend. Are we all doomed? I just keep prepping and praying, and insist that my distant family do the same.
