NEW YORK Defense Secretary Robert Gates expressed disappointment Friday at news outlets that used a picture taken and distributed by The Associated Press depicting a U.S. Marine mortally wounded in combat in Afghanistan.
The AP distributed the picture despite personal pleas from Gates and the dead Marine's family in a case that illustrated the difficult decisions in reporting on a conflict where Americans have seen relatively few images of fallen U.S. troops over eight years.
The picture, by AP photographer Julie Jacobson, showed Lance Cpl. Joshua "Bernie" Bernard, 21, lying on the ground with severe leg injuries after being struck by a grenade in an ambush on Aug. 14, his fellow Marines tending to him. Bernard later died of his wounds.

Say what?
You replied to others challenging your thoughtless position, why not her’s?
It was done on purpose to stir up muslims hatred more here and around the world...Dontcha get it yet, Islam is here, it’s in the White House and surrounded by the likes of Van Jones, Arianna Huffington. Islam’s goal? Conquer the world. Have they?
I guess we do have different definitions. When the family asks the photos not be used of a dying man, I think that means something, you dont.
DITTO... and, Amen.
I don't how anyone could debate this point.
The AP showed sickening, self-serving disrespect, and gross callousness by publishing it. They are guilty of flipping-off a mother in the midst of her grieving the loss of a son. May those at the AP who made the decision to publish the photo -- all leftist, US soldier hating pigs -- go to hell.
I must say that I agree with you on this. There's a possibility that we're all about to see a lot of dying the the streets, so we might as well become jaded to it.
And, why not see the true sacrifice that our soldiers are making on our behalf?
Regarding seeing a similar picture of Obama in the aftermath of him falling victim to such a bombing I would say it's a waste of ink. All of us already know by now that he's "red" on the inside.
on September 11th, men and women lept from the Towers, to their deaths to escape the agony of the flames. The pictures are almost never seen in print. I am sure that the mother of every victim would say “don’t publish’ if asked, and yet I believe these pictures should be published, every year, to remind the nation why we fight.
The Bernard family does not grieve over the publishing of a photograph, they grieve the loss of their son and the hopes and dreams that died with him. I pray God brings them comfort.
As for the brave young marine, he and I will meet one day and I will express my gratitude then.
Semper Fi
Kennedy, Reagan.. two that did get shot on camera. yes they would.
lack-of-trust is a newbie.
Didn’t the current president okay the photographing the coffins coming in at Dover Air Force Base? Why would anyone not expect what followed? This is who these people are. Resist them when you vote. As a matter of fact, resist them when they rant.
I would like to see him express his gratitude to you as well...........
“As for the brave young marine, he and I will meet one day and I will express my gratitude then.”
I would like to see him express his “gratitude” to you.
People need to see that war is hell. People need to see the toll it takes on our sons and daughters. People need to see what they sacrifice for our freedom. People need to see this ghastly photo. May it be burned into our minds so that we never forget this marine’s sacrifice for us.
Where’s the AP bias in this particular situation? Their photographer was there, on the front lines, risking her life to bring us photos of our boys fighting in Afghanistan, and this happened. Which do you prefer? White-washed DoD controlled PR telling us everything is fine, or the truth? I am sorry the family’s wishes weren’t respected, and I pray that they find healing, and that their son’s sacrifice will not be in vain.
AMEN!!!
newbie and a lurking troll. . . .
Member of that Marine family requested the photo NOT be published.
....and you as a Marine, do not have a problem with that????
WTH
If the photo was of an unidentified Marine, not specifically identified, then you may have some leeway with that argument. But it was not. It was clearly identified as a specific Marine and the wishes of the family, the grieving family, were ignored so the “reporter” and the media could pursue their holy grail—the Pulitzer. That is the sole motivation for those jackals, nothing more noble.
They feast on the carcass of a dying young man so they can grow fat from the accolades of their media peers.
Next time a media war-wh*re is killed or injured, no tears from me, no prayers for them.
I sincerely wish their mangled and bloody body as they lay dying is never published and their memory fades quickly from memory.
They have done nothing nobel, nothing honorable, and showed distain and arrogance when faced with a true situation that tested their humanity. . . .and they were found wanting.
Your words ring as hollow as an empty can. Do you work for the AP?
Common decency plays no part in your evaluation. I’m sorry you lack that trait.
They have done nothing nobel, nothing honorable, and showed distain and arrogance when faced with a true situation that tested their humanity. . . .and they were found wanting.
The best sentence written here in a long time. And I like the Jackal description.
