Nevada GOP chair opens door to Senate run (Sue Lowden running against Reid)

LAS VEGAS

– Sue Lowden plans to step down from her position running Nevada’s Republican Party, a sign that she’s preparing to challenge Majority Leader Harry Reid in next year’s Senate race.

According to two people familiar with the matter, Lowden is expected to inform state GOP activists on a conference call Wednesday night that she plans to quit the chairmanship effective Sept. 30. Doing so would allow her to jump into what could be a contested GOP primary against several other Republican candidates.

A poll released by the Las Vegas Review-Journal last month said that if she escapes the primary, Lowden would beat Reid 45-40 percent. Another potential candidate, Republican Danny Tarkanian, would defeat Reid 49-38 percent, according to the poll. Reid is the top Republican target in 2010, and the national party is sure to put millions into trying to defeat him.

Still, there is ample time for Reid to turn around his poor poll numbers – and he’s planning to build up a war chest of some $25 million – that will make any challenge against the powerful majority leader a daunting task.

Does anyone know her politics and how they stack up to the other Republican running?

OTOH, Reid has 14 months to alienate even more voters than he already has.

Nevada Republicans need to get organized around whomever has the best chance of beating Reid. We need to get that despot out of Washington.

I’ve talked to a few NV FReepers. The consensus is she’s generally conservative, although not a Jim DeMint or anything. They generally have positive things to say, and also that she will be a formidable candidate to run against Reid.

I’ll gladly support her against Harry Reid. Reid is one of the most contemptible people in all of Washington.

I’ve heard her described as “McCain-ish”. Danny Tarkanian, however, is a true fiscal conservative.

If this is true that Tarkanian is more conservative then we need to get on this immediately. this is how we wind up with RINO’s and are looking backwards wondering what happened. We need to be ahead of the curve. There are times when the only one to know of the rat is a weak R, but if there are two viable candidates and one is clearly more conservative (I’m not saying yet that this is the case here) then we need to do everything to elect the more conservative one in the primary.

Here is a link to Tarkanian’s issue positions on his campaign webstie. For the most part it is pretty inpressive and more commital to conservative views than I have seen on other republican campaign sites. http://www.dannytarkanian.org/?q=issues

Obviously Louden doesn’t have a website yet, but we’ll be looking at it carefully.

I like what I hear out of Tarkanian, but he hasn’t been very successful in politics. He’s ran for several things unsuccessfully and we’ll need a proven candidate to take on Reid.

AS NEVADA’S GOP CHAIR, WHY ???? DOES SHE CHOOSE TO RUN RATHER THAN SUPPORT TARKANIAN ?

SHE MAY BE COMPETENT, BUT SINCE DANNY TARKANIAN IS ALREADY A CANDIDATE, HER DECISION TO MUDDY THE WATERS SEEMS TO BE IN THE INTEREST OF SELF RATHER THAN THE PARTY.

REMINDS ME OF KATHERINE HARRIS WHO WASN’T CONTENT TO BE A REPRESENTATIVE. . .HAD TO BE A SENATOR AFTER ONLY A FEW MONTHS IN DC.

POLITICIANS. . .A SELF-SERVING BREED UNTO THEMSELVES.

At least, like Harris, she’s very attractive. . .so that’s a good thing. . .& besides that, I obviously know NOTHING about Nevada politics. So good luck to her if she runs. And excuse the rant. . .just needed to vent

Relevent to this discussion, Jim Gergaghty over at campaign spot just posted a new poll by the radical Daily Kossacks that Show dingy Ried trailing tarkanian by 5 and Lowden by three.!!! This is a Kook poll. Imagine what a real poll would show. One other thing, Tarkanian is up 5 on ried, so this is not a situation where we can say that the supposed more conservative candidate is not electable.

“Does anyone know her politics and how they stack up to the other Republican running?”

She’s pretty much a RINO. We need better leadership here in NV so I’m all in favor of her stepping down. The NV Republican party is in shambles and she has done nothing to bring the party together. We went from red to blue last election, voter registration tipped to the RATs in Washoe County (Reno) last election. Ensign can’t keep his pants on and Gov. Gibbons (R) is despised by a majority of Nevadans. Personally I like Gibbons as he had the cajones to stand up to tax increases and just said no. The RAT controlled assembly and senate was able to override his veto. Their attacks on Gibbons are relentless. I think Tarkanian would be a better candidate.

Agree, but you have to consider track record and fundraising ability. Lowden seems to have both. Tarkanian has not had any success.

But he is actually doing ever slightly better in the polls. Usually in a situation where you have a RINO big name and a conservative no name, the RINO polls ahead of the conservative against the Rat. In this case it appears that Takranian is very much a viable challenger.

True, but elections are different than polls. You need to be able to campaign, you need to be able to get the vote out, you need to secure big donors and raise cash from lots of different sources, you need to have seasoned political people around you. I’m not saying Tarkanian doesn’t have that, it’s just that his record doesn’t indicate so. Also, I definitely want the most conservative possible candidate that can win, so no disagreement on that. Let’s wait and see what Sue Lowden has to say about her views and philosophy.

Bottom line, let’s take out Harry Reid.

It would be awsome to toss that piece of crap out. I’d like to be a fly on the wall at moveon.org hq when that happens.

Here he is on the issues from his site.

Sounds pretty solid to me. I like that he's a business man and Rhodes Scholar candidate. Smart, hard working and experienced. Most importantly not another trial lawyer.
