It seems that Naomi Wolf is quite upset by what Ive written yesterday. She has posted a comment at my blog, written to me privately (below), left a message in my office and written to at least one website that linked to my blog. I am answering her here.
Dear Naomi:
Hello and I hope you are well too. My piece is not a personal attack. Please dont take it as such. It is a political and intellectual critique of what you wrote.... There are no terrible inaccuracies in what Ive written or in how Ive conveyed the general tenor of your article. Your demand that I print a correction and issue an apology is uncalled for as is your offer to go over my mistakes with me, point by point, on the phone or in a debate. I dare say, this last bit is a wee bit arrogant and frightening.
One womans mistake is another womans opinion.
I now understand that youve left a phone message in my office, posted a letter at my blogsite at Pajamas Media, written to me privately, and also written to Frontpage Magazine which has linked to my piece today.
Are you going to track down every site that linked to this piece as well?

Good on You.

What did she say in the first place that riled up Wolf?
I think she tore into Naomi Wolf for claiming that Muslim women were strong, empowered feminists underneath their burkhas.
Narcissist Naomi can’t take what she dishes out, can she.
Game, set, match. Chesler.
I find here some truth in what Naomi says.
Me-owww!
Chesler wiped the floor with young Naomi.
She deserved the thrashing she got, IMHO.
Now that Wolf is no longer the doe-eyed ingenue of yesteryear, she sees the advantage of not being on view at all times. A Westerner, playing Muslim-dress up, Wolf claims that hiding in plain view gave her a novel sense of calm and serenity. I felt, yes, in certain ways, free. In addition, Wolf believes that the marital sex is hotter when women cover and reveal their faces and bodies only to their husbands.

Well, what can I say? Heres a few things.
Most Muslim girls and women are not given a choice about wearing the chador, burqa, abaya, niqab, jilbab, or hijab (headscarf), and those who resist are beaten, threatened with death, arrested, caned or lashed, jailed, or honor murdered by their own families. Is Wolfe thoroughly unfamiliar with the news coming out of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan on these very subjects? Has she forgotten the tragic, fiery deaths of those schoolgirls in Saudi Arabia who, in trying to flee their burning schoolhouse, were improperly veiled and who were beaten back by the all-powerful Saudi Morality Police?
* * *
Being veiled and obedient does not save a Muslim girl or woman from being incested, battered, stalked, gang-raped, or maritally raped nor does it stop her husband from taking multiple wives and girlfriends or from frequenting brothels. A fully covered girl-child, anywhere between the ages of 10-15, may still be forced into an arranged marriage, perhaps with her first cousin, perhaps with a man old enough to be her grandfather, and she is not allowed to leave him, not even if he beats her black and blue every single day.
What you don’t understand is that Wolfe is just reflecting the shift in Feminist thought. Because white men are evil, anything that is not done by white men (even if it involves female oppression) is good. Wearing a burka is the modern equivalent of burning your bra.
Looked up Wolf, as I’d never heard of her. Read about two paragraphs and determined she’s the kind of woman you’d rather avoid.
From what I read, she lives in her own little world, and constructs verbose arguments that have nothing to do with reality. I’ve run into many such types on college campuses.
There is something much darker going on here than multiculturalism. Wolfe deserved to get her butt handed to her and she did.
Naomi is a psychiatric case.
Dr. Chesler is a recovering liberal mugged by reality and an open mind.
You decide.
Pass the popcorn BUMP
Part of it is elitism too. Wolfe is perfectly fine with women suffering in the Third World as long as her (and her ilk) get cradle-to-grave socialism in the USA.
