Afternoon RBB, All...
...sudden and sad news here in the swamps of Delaware. Happened last night. I went out to the porch around quarter till seven, puttered around, marveled over the monarch butterfly chrysalis and checked on the monarch butterfly caterpillars still stripping the milkweed bare.
Heard sirens. Lots of sirens. Lots and lots and lots of sirens. Which is not an unusual sound here in this resort area in that the summer tourists believe the laws of physics do not apply while on vacation, that they may speed, pass on solid lines and in general kill themselves for the sheer joy of it.
I told husband those sirens sound serious. This means the roads will be blocked for hours and often, for reasons unknown, the electricity will go off. Husband turns on the radio to find the scoop.
Georgetown Del is the capital of Sussex county, the largest county east of the Mississip in the smallest state. It’s a quaint little town, here since colonial times, part and parcel of the revolutionary war and traveled by Cesar Rodney, Delaware’s Paul Revere. Folks who go through it love it and remark on it. Its Main street is picturesque though behind that charm it’s a Mexican barrio almost but moving on.
For the first time in its history, Georgetown Del lost a cop, shot in the face and killed in the line of duty. He died on the way to the hospital, the same hospital where I had my quadruple bypass, the same hospital where husband had his first of many seizures and was diagnosed with pneumonia. Another Georgetown cop was hit in the neck by shattered ammunition and is in critical condition, airlifted up north to Christiana hospital, the same hospital where they took my husband when the local hospital couldn’t stop his major seizure.
This is a small semi-rural, almost a hick type of area. You can imagine the shock of this community over this.
To add to the sorrow, the officer’s mother was a member of the Sussex County Republican Woman’s Club of which I am the campaign chair. She is the President of the East Sussex County Republican Club.
We are sad, shocked and the community is coming together.
A couple of thugs tried to rob a McDonald’s, the same McDonalds I stopped at this morning to pick up my husband’s daily iced coffee. From Cumberland Maryland, 22 years old, a big zero nothing burger, he was chased by the two Georgetown cops. When they were ready to take him in he pulled out his gun and shot Officer Chad Spicer in the face. The bullet shatters on Spicer’s neckbone and hit the other officer in the neck.
We do have a death penalty here in Delaware but like most state’s death penalties, chickenshits don’t use it.
Officer Spicer had a two year old daughter. I know and admire his mother, sat with her last year, me and my granddaughter, at the annual watermelon fest put on by the president of the Sussex county council.
Sad day here in the swamps of Delaware folks.
