And how much history is being re-written? Our textbooks are full of examples of historical manipulations. Even the ‘History Channel’ is unbearable these days due to the left winged commie propaganda. What it means is that he MISSED scheduled drills--there is no other way to cut it he admitted missing drills--gaining good years only due to the gratuitous points that the Reserve and Guards hands out to members.)

And, in fact, 60 points is the credited amount required for retirement purposes of a member desiring to have a successful career in the Reserve but, realistically, a member should try to get as many points as possible as the points translate into the retirement check you'll get once you turn 60. Currently, our Navy, Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guards reservists are gaining 365 points per year--one for every day (rather than the one for every four-hour drill that someone in a non-combat unit earns.

Go back and read the oath of enlistment that Bush made as a Guardsman click here and tell me that he really bore "true faith and allegiance to the State of Texas" by abandoning his F-102 Texas Air Guard unit to do some campaigning for a politician in Alabama at a base in which he never flew again and most in his unit don't even remember him showing up for drills.

He “accidentally” signed up for 4, but daddy pulled some strings (IIRC) and got his time reduced to 2 years. I believe this was after his second expulsion for cheating. He then went back to college after his stunted enlistment was up and graduated (barely).

What it means is that you are out to smear Bush with your nonsense, he didn’t “abandon” someone, he transferred, and missing some drills and doing makeups is not a great sin, and the end of the Vietnam war was a time when everything in the military was shutting down, units were overmanned with nothing to do, officers were being driven from the service or busted back to enlisted rank by the hundreds or thousands.

I left the army pretty close to when Bush left the Guard but ten years later I joined a high speed Guard Company and spent a few years there, missed drills were accommodated as were transfers, in fact I remember when a less desirable unit was trying to steal away some of our guys. My company was desirable enough that we had guys flying in from distant parts of the country to attend but if that became too much trouble then they could transfer to another unit in their home state.

Don’t be trying to convince this audience that if they join the Guard that they are signing their life away, if they want to move to another state or if they have to miss a few drills then the Guard is fine with that.

I wonder if Bush’s Guard duty might have been a little more intense than yours, what did you do in the navy reserves?

A PFC is as high as he could have gone in 2 years. NOT that I am a Swimmer Supporter - Them’s just the Army regs.

If that was true in the 1950s I know it sure wasn't true later during the Vietnam war. Are you sure about that?

Time in service, time in grade and MOS were the determining factors in enlisted rank, and to a lesser extent Occifer rank, advancement.
If a person had less than 2+ yrs time in service and they advanced beyond E-3, PFC, then it was a rare case of their having the MOS, usually Infantry, that allowed that to occur. It was done on the rare occasion to fill a slot that needed filled in a hurry and meant that no suitable replacement could be shuffled into the slot. OR the person being advanced possessed 'certain skills' needed for the slot.
In the mid-70s I knew of some enlistees getting credit for civilian skills that were needed in the Army who were brought in as PFC, advanced to Spc 4 after basic and after doing a series of MOS qualifier test. They then spent the remainder of their 1st year as Spec 4 and were advanced to Spec 5's after their 2nd year. But these were rare cases.
But then again, here we are speaking of a 'rare case' that did involve outside ..."encouragement."

I went in on a two year enlistment and made E-4 in less than a year, I was promoted in late 1972 or maybe the first month of 1973. I don’t recall it being a big deal or unusual and I was in the artillery, all these years I have felt that a racist black NCO kept me from becoming an E-5 before I got out, in fact my best friend that went in at the same time as me did make E-5 before his enlistment was up and he was a medic.

They also wanted me to go to OCS which I was fine with until it came time to go before the board that followed all the tests and I decided that it was just too much trouble and investment for someone that wasn’t going to be in long, I don’t remember if an enlistment extension was required.

At the time it was also explained by SF that if I went Special Forces I would have to extend for 8 months but I think they said that you are made an E-5 for training.

I just don’t remember the 2 year enlistment being a big hindrance to anything and definitely not a hindrance to reaching E-4.
