Obama's Worst Poll Number
Real Clear Politics ^ | Today | Jay Cost

Gallup's breakdown of Obama's job approval by age was illuminating.

First off, note Obama's drop-off among young people. Young people were supposed to be a critical component of the new Democratic majority. Granted their approval is still slightly higher than the other groups, but it has far and away been the most volatile, dropping more than any other. This should not come as a huge surprise. Baby Boomers were partial to McGovern in 1972, but swung around to Reagan in the 80s. Young people's political dispositions are still being formed.

Well I am sure many of those young people spent the summer out of a job, so maybe that hopey changey thing did not work out too well.

I don’t understand how he still maintains an overall approval of 51%. Idiots.

I agree - and aside from Gainsborough's tour de force, the "Blue Boy" isn't a good example of privilege.

The boy was the son of a merchant in London, not one of the privileged class. And Gainsborough decked him out in fancy 17th century dress as a homage to Van Dyck.

I think it would be more fun to mess with something like Rembrandt's Belshazzar's Feast -

Wardaddy,
Thank you for this much needed correction.
Will write more later as I’m on vacation and just had to put a f**king state funeral on my busy schedule.

Love, Barrack

some also think he took some inspiration in the pose from an earlier Charles II Van Dyck had done and somehing about Van Dyck’s talk of light inspiration....it is to me anyhow one of the finest representational arts ever produced..in the top 10-20 I’d wager even to critics wouldn’t you?

it’s funny, I’m old now but as lad in the 60s I recall going into country homes in the South and there would be Blue Boy on the wall in the parlor or foyer of whites from real crackers to gentry

it was as ubiquitous as JFK was in black homes lol

I never knew till just now that it hung in a private home for some time in Kali

Obama's getting hammered on Facebook with regularity. Stunningly so. He's becoming 'uncool'.

As Alinsky said, ridicule is a great weapon. Use it. Nothing makes someone uncool to the "yutes" faster than if they're the butt of everyone's jokes.

It was a mistake to allow 18 year olds to vote.

Brilliant artist.

"The beautiful Mrs. Graham" - a renowned society beauty, nee' Miss Cathcart.

But I think I like him best in his less polished mode - as in this sketch of his daughters -

I'm a minority opinion, I know, but I think that Hogarth - when he's on his game - is the best of the English painters.

You’re right about the ubiquity of the “Blue Boy” in the South, btw. My mom, who has always been more avant-garde than I am (still is) used to roll her eyes. And I remember Mad magazine had a parody back in the 60s . . .

Young people were dumbed down by bad public education and still naive enough to buy into his hogwash.. now they get to see the dems/commies in action and learn that what they were told in school was absolute hogwash.

A lot of college grads out there not finding any work, and seeing a guy who they “believed” in.. perpetually lie to them.

The piper will be paid, make no doubt about it.

One of Reynolds's best known subjects was the beautiful Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. This is my favorite:

Reynolds's celebrity portraits were a little too burnished for my taste, but like Gainsborough he had his less formal moments and in my opinion was better then. Here are his portraits of Dr. Samuel Johnson - the first, made when Johnson was a relatively young man, is a frighteningly realistic likeness of a man with a lot of physical and emotional problems --

The second is just as revealing, although more subtly:

And the third is the public Johnson, the grouch.

I think Reynolds was very perceptive, but only if he knew you and liked you. Clearly he liked Johnson.

Here's another jolly Hogarth:

Garrick (the actor) and his wife.

Holbein is one of my favorites. He defined the Tudor era, even if he was technically a German. (Handel was a German, too -- and so was George I).

The French Ambassadors. That's an anamorphically projected skull in the foreground.

His "Dead Christ Entombed" is brutal -

He looked pissed off this morning when he gave his (very brief) statement on Kennedy’s demise.

First of all, his vacation is being interrupted. Secondly, all the crap about Cheney and the CIA is being pushed right off the front page. Also, his 500 staged pro-Public Option rallies will be ignored by the media as they chase down various Kennedys and hangers-on from the Mass. State Capitol to the Church to Arlington.

I love it when a plan (Karma’s Plan) comes together!
