The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into allegations that state Sen. R.C. Soles tried to molest a 15-year-old boy.

Rex Gore, district attorney for Brunswick, Columbus and Bladen counties, said the Tabor City police chief asked him Thursday morning to contact the SBI to conduct an investigation after a local TV station aired the allegations.

“I agree that they need to be examined,” Gore said.

The young man told a TV reporter Soles tried to touch him in a sexual manner when he was 15 years old.

Soles, a 74-year-old Democrat and the longest-serving state Senator, has been the subject of recent media coverage about his relationships with several young men in Columbus County since the home of one of them, Allen Strickland, was torched by an arsonist two weeks ago.

Gore said Tabor City police believe they know the origin of the fire and expect to make an arrest next week.

Gore said the Tabor City police enlisted the help of the SBI because they have limited manpower.

The DA emphasized that the preliminary steps have been taken and no charges have been filed. He said his office will examine the evidence collected by the state to determine the credibility of the allegations.

Soles did not return a message left at his law office in Tabor City.

In an article published by the Brunswick Beacon, Soles explained his relationships with the young men, who are also clients of his law firm, as that of a benefactor. He said he has given money and gifts to “many” in Tabor City.

In the article, he also said he had trouble with some of the clients stalking him and has called the local police to step in.

“Maybe I’ve been too giving,” he said.

Good thing he didn’t stick his foot under a restroom stall, it would mean the death penalty.

Molestation, arson, shootings. I think I'll wait to see it on Law and Order.

This senator is caught up in a big mess. Apparently, He has represented criminals and then sends them $ and gifts even while they are in prison. One of criminals who tried to break in was an ex-client. The senator had purchased a Tahoe for this criminal in the past - according to these reports.

BETTER UPDATE: The StarNews reports that there were two intruders at the Soles home, Blackburn and B.J. Wright. Those following the Soles story will remember that Wright, another ex-con, was also the recipient of generous gifts from the senator, including a Chevy Tahoe

“The other man involved in the incident is B.J. Wright, Batten said. Multiple media outlets have reported that Wright was a legal client of Soles – an attorney – and that Soles gave him money while Wright was in prison.”
