Republicans Say Democrats Are Censoring More GOP Mail
Roll Call ^ | August 21, 2009 | Jackie Kucinich

House Republicans this week accused Democrats of censoring GOP mailings to constituents on a variety of subjects and of imposing uneven requirements on the minority party’s mail.

Democrats on the franking commission — which must approve all official mail — have blocked Republicans from using politically weighted descriptions of climate change legislation, the stimulus bill and other issues, according to e-mails obtained by Roll Call.

Rep. John Culberson (R-Texas) said he went through seven drafts of his last newsletter, which included language about energy policy.

“It’s embarrassing and unsupportable,” Culberson said, adding that requests for approval used to take a matter of days instead of weeks.

Several e-mails between Member offices and franking commission staff obtained by Roll Call show that a number of recent GOP mail pieces were initially denied in part because they used the phrase “cap and tax” to describe the American Clean Energy and Security Act. The bill would establish a cap on carbon emissions, allowing companies that cannot meet the cap to buy offsets from other companies that emit less than their share, otherwise known as cap-and-trade. Republicans argue the measure amounts to a broad tax on consumers.

Isn’t this against the law?

And if it isn’t, why not?

Isn’t this unconstitutional as far as freedom of speech provisions are concerned?

It isn't going to get any better.

The deeper the Dems sink, the more desperate they will become.

Pray for the Republic.

Of course it is. But since when do these people abide by the law? When have they ever abided by the Constitution. They want to demolish it, not abide by it. Remember what zero said, it doesn't say what the govt can do on your behalf, and he wants a form a new foundation, translation, a new constitution.

Anderson said majority and minority staff reviewed the content of the GOP franking requests and that decisions were made in a bipartisan process.

If a Republicans don't fire any staffer who would go along with this then they really can't complain. Or they could pull their all their staff out of the process. Then the democrats wouldn't hid behind bipartisanship. If they aren't willing to lift a finger to change what's happening then they should just shut up.

Here’s how it works when you’re in the minority: your staff gets to “review” everything, but you and your staff have NO SAY over the final decision. You are lucky if they bother to notify you when a decision is made. Sucks to be you in the minority. You would think the Dems would remember how it was to be in the minority, in order to avoid paybacks later. But they don’t. On several issues, the Republicans attempted to make nice with the Dems in situations like this when they were in the majority. This is the thanks they get. I wonder if they will be so accommodating next time?

I'd certainly urge the GOP to give the Democrats tit for tat on this issue next chance they get. Deny them the ability to get timely propaganda out to their base.

With the advent of E-mail and talk radio, it seems that the only ones losing with this deal is the Post Office. If we could de-fund the taxpayer funded congressional perks we could save some money.
