EDINBURGH, Scotland — Scotland freed the terminally ill Lockerbie bomber on compassionate grounds Thursday, allowing him to die at home in Libya despite American protests that mercy should not be shown to the man responsible for the deaths of 270 people.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said Abdel Baset al-Megrahi's condition had deteriorated from prostate cancer. Al-Megrahi had only served some eight years of a life sentence, but MacAskill said he was bound by Scottish values to release him.

This is beyond belief! This murderer did not show any compassion when he killed all those people on that airliner, why should he be granted compassion now. Imo, he should have been executed.

Please don’t flame me but this is with the consent of the US Administration.

Why would I flame you if our admin aided and abetted this atrocity? FWIW, I doubt most citizens of the UK agree with this decision any more than most of the folks over here do.

I just hope someone finds out what sort of deal went down and who the people involved in doing it were.

I remember the day this happened, I was on leave from the Air Force and walked into a bar in St. Louis Airport, everyone there was ready to fight.

Everyone was also concerned about catching their connecting flight.

I too believe he should be freed.

From 35,000 feet.

No parachute.

"It is right he should go home to die in dignity with his family. I believe it is our Christian duty to show mercy," he said.

I think he forfeited his right to "die in dignity" while his victims blew apart in the air or fell to earth and into pieces. The showing of mercy should be the privilege of the those who mourn not some bureaucratic system.

I just worried that you (or others) might read it as saying as American people support this, rather than politicians.

The real barometer of this is that the Scottish Government and/or UK Government would not go against America on terrorism. Never in a million years.

The SNP regularly go to America and (much to the Scottish peoples embarrasment) kiss the feet of America politicians. And this decision will go down as badly in the Scotland, and the UK as a whole, as badly as America. Just wait and see how the SNP suffer when Megrahi is treated as a hero.

My only worry is that the Scottish people will suffer for the actions of a few politicians. Ring a bell?

"...this is with the consent of the US Administration. This is a Machiavellian deal agreed to stop Libya’s Nuclear programme and general terrorist activity."

I wish I could say that this shocks me, but unfortunately, it doesn't. I would venture a guess that there was likely a lot of Saudi money & influence involved, too.

Thanks very much for giving us the view from the other side of the pond!

Oh, yeah. Well, let's hope someone shines some sunshine on this deal.

The victims are still dead; they will get no parole. I have nothing but contempt for muslims and the western pukes that coddle them.

Unfortunately it will always be hidden. This is why he is being released because his appeal would have shone light on everything.

The condition of release was to drop his appeal. This is not about compassion. This is a cover-up.

The worrying this is that the cover-up is not to protect Megrahi, but the UK, US and what many believe to be the real culprit: Iran.

You think the UK would release a terrorist if America was truly opposed to it? What if it came out on the appeal that Megrahi didn’t do it, but that the UK, USA and Libya knew it to be Iran? Could war be averted? Could Obama back down?

Wouldn’t it be better for the UK and US Governments to let the Scottish Executive take the bad publicity, but back them privately, and when Megrahi dies the secrets die with him?

From their point of view it is better. If the UK Government was opposed they could have done something. If America truly wanted this stopped they could have done something.

Worst Scottish joke since Arlen 'Scottish Law' Specter.
