A SCOTTISH soldier has been praised for making the longest recorded kill in Afghanistan after shooting a top Taliban fighter from almost a mile away.

Corporal Christopher Reynolds took out the Afghan drug lord during some of the hardest fighting of the war so far.

The 25-year-old, of 3 Scots, The Black Watch, kept watch on a shop rooftop for three days to eliminate the target.

But he admitted the top-level Taliban fighter – known as Musa – was so far away it took him a couple of attempts to get the aim right.

Initially Musa, who was with four men, did not even realise he was being shot at.

But Cpl Reynolds, of Dalgety Bay, in Fife, together with his spotter Lance Corporal David Hatton, worked out different factors such as wind speed and the trajectory of the bullet to hit the target. Musa, who was more than 1,500 metres away, was taken out with a

What the hell are they doing posting his name and city or origin?

Ditto on that thought. This is just wrong.

The 34-year-old fired his Javelin launcher – only used in the “most desperate of situations” – to take out the sniper after seeing him shoot patrols.

That's gotta hurt

Stories that make you smile, including the additional bit about the javelin kill.

Thats a real stretch for a .308. I’ve shot at man-sized steel targets at 1000 meters with a .308. With NO wind, and pre-determined ballistics for the load you are using, a very good, repeatable adjustment scope,AND a precise lazer range finder , its not too difficult. Add another 500 meters, any wind at all, it would become VERY difficult with a .308. One of the better cartridges for this would be the .416 Chey Tac. It is probably a little superior to the .50 BMG for anti-personnel work. ,although it is based on the same sized case.
The .338 Lapua is sort of between the 30 calibers and the big “50” in both range, and weight. It can be made in a lighter package than those guns that are based on the 50BMG, and still deliver the goods at well past 1000 meters.

Wow... what was he shooting?... 30 cal or 50 cal? 1500 meters with almost everything 30 cal that I can think of off the top is "tricky" at best! Could it have been that new rifle they've got that shoots the .338 Lapua? Whatever it was...GOOD SHOOTING! :-)

Don't know what he shot, but I can't imagine how the Secret Service protects against stuff like this here at home. Agents must all have ulcers...

What works in the SS's favor is that very few have that kind of skill.

Please do not refer to the Secret Service as the SS, despite the guy in the White House they have to protect.

I believe the Scots use Accuracy Internationals Rifles in 50BMG as well as the .338 Lapua . Could have been either or IMO.......

..... I have a Dakota Longbow in .338 Lapua that is about 20 years old right now.....still shoots well. Cost me 2 months pay back when .

Malcolm Cooper was an Olympic Shooter who developed the AI series.......got to shoot a few of em in 7.62 NATO and 300 Win mag but was retired before the 50 and 338 came out in that companies offerings.

Very very good rig but lordy it seemed like it was heavier than the M-60 Pig when ya had to hump em on a long walk !
