Unions To Counter Town Hall 'Tea-Party Patriots': Report
NPR ^ | August 6, 2009 | Frank James

Posted on 08/06/2009 10:28:04 AM PDT by mdittmar

Like the cavalry, organized labor reportedly plans on swooping in to the rescue of beleaguered lawmakers who are getting shouted down by conservative activists at town-hall meetings during discussions of health-care overhaul legislation.

The Huffington Post's Sam Stein reports that the AFL-CIO is calling on its troops to counter the anti-health care reform hecklers.

An excerpt:

The nation's largest federation of labor organizations has promised to directly engage with boisterous conservative protesters at Democratic town halls during the August recess.

In a memo sent out on Thursday, AFL-CIO President John Sweeney outlined the blueprint for how the union conglomerate would step up recess activities on health care reform and other topics pertinent to the labor community. The document makes clear that Obama allies view the town hall forums as ground zero of the health care debate. It also uses the specter of the infamous 2000 recount "Brooks Brothers" protest to rally its members to the administration's side.
The principal battleground in the campaign will be town hall meetings and other gatherings with members of Congress in their home districts," reads the memo. "We want your help to organize major union participation to counter the right-wing "Tea-Party Patriots" who will try to disrupt those meetings, as they've been trying to do to meetings for the last month. ...

(Remember the hooligans - many of them Republican Congressional staff - who harassed Florida vote counters in 2000? We can't let that happen again!)."

These already ugly town halls look like they could be about to get significantly uglier.

Ah, I knew this would happen, and the union thugs will do their best to start some violence and blame it on the protesters.

It might work in certain areas where unions are strong, but there is a whole lot of the US where unions aren’t squat. Also, if the crowds get large enough, unions won’t stop them. The more the democrats try to discredit the crowds the larger they are going to get.

Amazing. Though once the union members understand how their leadership is selling them out (the unions will use the national plan to write down the health care obligation on their books and then loot the funding that the companies pay into the union-run plans) they may reap the whirlwind.

Don’t Union members have really good heathcare benefits? It seems they would really be against government conrolled healthcare. I think fighting in the streets is what Obama wants. Then he can delcare Marshall Law. The truth is that if you don’t stand for what is yours it will be lost. There is always someone wanting to take it. What Obama is attempting is nothing new.

What I fear, though, is that this is all the excuse the government will need to further erode our civil liberties.

Martial law? Or am I being paranoid?

Listen, and understand.

Hussein of Mombasa is out there. He can’t be bargained with. He can’t be reasoned with. He doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And he absolutely will not stop, ever, until we are dead.

In Tampa Kathy Castor is holing up with Acorn and the SEIU> in hopes of intimidating concerned civilians. I am on my way to the meeting to engage. All excited. It feels good to enter the fray in person. She cancelled her regular meeting and they are circling the wagons in Ybor City. TallyHo!

Yes, liberals have mastered the art of being hypocrites and doing it with a straight face.

Large groups of people wearing ACORN shirts, carrying professionally made signs, bussed in to demonstrate, are just concerned citizens, but loose-knit groups of middle class folks wearing everything from t-shirts and jeans to polyester pant suits are somehow a mob.

I wish there was one of these protest rallies in my area. I would like to knock heads with these union thugs!!! More than one I might add!!!!! I live in a stong conservative area, with republicans all around me.

OTOH, I can't see the union thugs in favor of the healthcare bill and going to these protests, since this proposed plan will eventually do away with their cherry medical plans, directly affecting them and their families.

Aren’t the unions’ healthcare programs exempt from obamacare? I thought we were able to keep their programs. I know they are just being used here as headbangers.

What could these people (union members) possibly have to gain from this?

They already have “Cadillac” health plans. Don’t they stand to lose the most if this goes through? Are they going to be exempted?

We pay for Union Thug healthcare....and they think they can intimidate us for even more of our earnings, while taking away OUR private healthcare?

We own them, and its time we acted like it.

Union members will probably be exempt from government healthcare once the final bill passes. They will keep their health benefits and probably have the ability to write new private contracts with whatever health insurance companies remain once this is finally finalized.

BTW, I would love to get into a physical fight with any union thug. It would be great fun.
