UK: Nearly 400 NHS dentists earn more than £300,000

Nearly 400 NHS dentists earned more than £300,000 last year, new figures show, despite millions of patients struggling to access free treatment.

In total almost 1,200, or one in every 20 dentists, earned more than £200,000 between 2007 and 2008, three times as many as the previous year.

The rising number of dentists earning what were described as "staggering" sums was revealed just a day after it was disclosed that some GPs now make up to £380,000 a year.

The payments come despite the fact that 1.2 million fewer patients are seeing an NHS dentist since a new contract was introduced in 2006.

Official figures show that dentists are carrying out greater numbers of treatments per patient than in the past, as well as more complicated procedures.

Those in the highest earning brackets also put in longer hours, with the majority working more than 45 hours a week, the figures, released by the NHS Information Centre, show.

The income is before tax but after expenses, which typically include the costs of renting surgeries and paying staff, have been taken into account.

The figures, based on dentists' tax returns, include those who work solely for the health service as well as dentists who have a mix of NHS and private work.

They show that 382 of the 20,000 dentists in England and Wales earned more than £300,000 last year, while 1,172 earned more than £200,000. The average income was £89,062.

The new contract was deeply controversial among dentists and around 1,000 left the NHS before it was even implemented.

Problems included quotas to carry out a certain amount of treatments every year.

Dentists who reached their target too soon were effectively asked to work for free, while those who failed to reach the quota faced demands from their local healthcare trust

Have we seen an improvement in British teeth?

That may be true. But you gave to wonder why they’re getting paid so much when the NHS can’t afford amalgams and novocaine.

My guess is that these are the Oral Surgeons and difficult case Implant Specialists in private practice.

It is not possible to earn $600K (300K pounds) from the government health insurance by filling cavities.

And keep in mind that the marginal tax rate on high earners is well in excess of 50%, so they are basically working for the government anyway.

Here's the problem: Govt-run healthcare controls SALARY of everyone involved in the delivery of service...it also controls the profit of drug companies and suppliers of every sort.

The monopoly sets all service levels, prices and compensation. Each and every aspect of the monopoly's realm.

When the crunch is on...just like Calif state employees...doctors and nurses can expect salary reductions.

With Obamacare, doctors can expect to top out at $300k in the first 5 years...$200k within 10. Nurses can expect $35k in that same period.

I'm truly BAFFLED why the AMA signed on to this. They must believe a promise from a serial liar.

What do those two things have to do with one another?

This is the socialist madness. You play by their rules and beat them
at it and they get pissed and want to control you even more. It will be the same here.

Who runs the NHS? Well, that would be the Department of Health. It would seem to me that the article should focus on the government agency that allows this rather than the doctors who, if given a free market to operate in, would likely not be able to make that much unless the patients and their insurance companies thought their services were worth that much.

Much easier to demonize the doctors and force people to pull their own teeth.

Is this office gross or personal net? How are their offices set up? Who pays the overhead and office labor (hygienist), accounting and dental record costs?

Now, Now!

Is that 300k pounds for their office, or is that what the individual dentist takes away after paying for his staff, rent, supplies??

It’s reported that Oprah makes 6 kajillion a year - but that the contract, and then she has to pay for all the production, etc. I’m sure she nets ok, but these headlines are totally misleading.

I'm truly BAFFLED why the AMA signed on to this.

Because it is captive to ivory tower left wingers in academic medicine, who couldn't hack it in private practice, and think every doctor should get $150k for a 35 hour work week, instead of $400k for an 80 hour work week.

The private practice docs I know are bitterly disappointed at being sold out like this.

....BAFFLED why the AMA signed on to this.

Only a small percentage of Docs belong to the AMA. Surprised?

It is just another example of left-wingers taking over an organization in name. As a point of reference, remember when American Psychiatric Association (all 18 of them who were present) voted to remove homosexuality from their list of mental diseases?

“The income is before tax but after expenses, which typically include the costs of renting surgeries and paying staff, have been taken into account. “

After UK taxes thay might leave them with about 70 pounds.
